This was brought out today during the opening session at the 22nd annual festival of Puppeteers of America being held on the University of Utah campus. The festival is being sponsored by the Junior League of Salt Lake City and Pioneer Craft House. Emma Louise Warfield of Springfield, Pa., and a chapter member of the group is a pioneer in the use of puppets for therapy at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. She said the patients who have failed to respond to other types of therapy have responded when introduced to puppetry. They learn to manipulate the puppets as well as make them. Work with puppets and mental patients is quite new, but early results are good, Miss Warfield said. Instead of using strips of paper to make papier mache puppets, paper is tom by those undergoing the therapy, she pointed out. Patients are anxious to help build the puppets and take part in some production. She sa d that soft music and folk music and not sharp music is used in productions involving mental patients at the medical school.
