HURRY IN TO PEHRSON'S TODAY! g Long Telecast For Sunday . nmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimimiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMiimii By HOWARD Deseret News Television Editor television has an inseparable link with the space program, the medium has not been able to dictate hours for important NASA events as it has for sports. Best evidence of this is scheduling of the moon walk by astronauts of Apollo 11 in the early hours of Monday, beginning at 12:12, which is 12 minutes after midnight Sunday If TV controlled the space program as it does sports, the moon walk would have been scheduled tor sometime between 7:30 and 10 p.m. These are televisions prime hours. However, there is another feature of this Apollo 11 project that shows television is not controlling the program. The astronauts will be orbiting the moon, but will alternate LhUCKleS sleep for four hours before deleads the Neil Armstrong scent to tiie moon and takes the walk itself. The networks dont want to go to regular programming during the four hours because this is a running news story in whicn anything could happen, so they have planned special programs during that time. This four-hosegment will be part of a period during which the three networks will devote all their broadcast time to the Apollo. A series of "discussions w i th President Johnson hfAtv about his years as a senator "It'll be some time before vice president and President Apollo 11 reaches the moon, will start on CBS in their 30 so let's listen to these imporhours of coverage. Other tant messages . . ." CBS (Ch. 5) segments during the period include Space Man, a recapitulation of highlights of America's space program; live telecasts from 31 locations in 13 countries around the globe; analysis by Arthur C. Clarke, author of Space Odyssey, the successful movie; discussion by former astronaut Wally Schirra, ahd other features. NBC will have Danny Kaye as with John Chancellor and Aline Saarinen, and many actors, statesmen and others will appear in discussions, dramatic readings or songs. The network is lining up a r program of varied events. four-hou- For the four-lmperiod, ABC will have a panel discussion by wiewe - fiction writers moderated by author Kod Serling, in which space fantasies of the future will be discussed. Also, the network will have Steve Allen at the piano with a medley of moon songs with commentary; Col. Frank Borman, commander of Apollo 8, will reminisce about his flight; there will be a short history of the U.S. space program; Frank Reynolds will be seen with a group of children gathered on a mock-uof the moon's surface, gathering the view of space, and there will be a feature on how moviemakers have treated moon science-fictiothrough the years. p THURSDAY VIEWING Buy today on Easy Credit Terms! 5:00 Huntley Brinkley (c).
