Salt Lake City is the hub of our system, ttie key collecting point, he emphasized. WAL for the eastern schedules flights will be oriented to the convenience of Salt Lake passengers because we originate in the West. one-sto- p COTTONWOOD MAIL V jW 8 Thursday, July 17, 1969 B Western feels that it has the best backup service to enable us to provide a profitable operation. The operation must be profitable. Our backup is all in the West funneling into Salt Lake City, Slichter contended. He displayed a chart of the proposed WAL schedule indicating that one flight to Chicago and one to Washington-NeYork will originate in Salt Lake City. Others will start in Las Vegas, Reno, and Sacramento, Oakland Ontario, Calif., San Francisco and Los Angeles are included in the WAL system but were not considered as part of the backup for the Salt Lake City flights because the two cities already have nonstop service to the major eastern terminals. Western does not now have authorization to serve Chica w , go, Washington or New York. The company is seeking this authorization in the service to Salt Lake City case. Slichter noted that WAL is proposing two freight schedules to the East, the most extensive air freight offer of any airline in this case. Freight service has great possibilities, he said. The company is offering a. daily air freight flight to Chicago and one to New York. He said that WAL now has offices in Chicago, New York and Washington. These will be enlarged if Western is granted the additional authority it seeks. The CAB will hold hearings on the case Aug. 5. WAL is one of 10 airlines seeking authority to give additional transcontinental service to the Utah Capital. regularly to $6 J Reds Float , i Cuban Economy - Its NEW YORK (UPI) costing the Communist bloc more than $1 million a day to keep the Cuban economy afloat, Chase Manhattan bank said in its quarterly report cn world business conditions.
