DESERET NEWS, Ilnflation Talk 'Explosive 000 IMixon In iind ' Bv LOUIS HARRIS Public concern over the of cost high living has reached record proportions and President Nixon is now in the eye of the hurricane on this explosive issue. Here are the key findings on the inflation issue as they have emerged from the latest . Harris Survey: President Nixons rating in controlling the cost of living now is 46 to 32 per gent negative. 97 per cent of the public feels that the cost of living has gone up over a year ago. A majority of Americans are convinced, by 56 to 31 per cent, that such rises in the cost of living are not inevitable and can be avoided. CUT SPENDING By a massive 79 to 6 per cent, the American people feel the most urgent step to take in curbing inflation is to cut federal spending. .The public rejects, by a 3 to 2 margin,' putting in a poli' cy of tight money. ; People also turn down the 'proposal to substitute a national sales tax for the corporate income tax by 54 to 14 , per "tent. However, the public does favor instituting a system of wage and price controls by a decisive 50 to 26 per cent. The American people oppose continuation of the 10 per cent surcharge tax by to 22 per cent. Korean War days. Even more appealing to the American people as a way to curb the rise in the cost of living is to cut government spending. Today, people see federal spending as the main cause for the rise in the cost of living, more than wage in, creases. Back in 1965, government spending was the third most singled out culprit, behind both wage increases and middleman profits. In the judgment of most people, the one man who can do something about spending in Washington is the President himself. That is why he finds himself in the bulls-eyof this issue early in his days in office. NOT INEVITABLE The public by no means sees the inflationary spiral as inevitable. A cross section of 1,542 households was asked between May 20th and May 26th: Do you think that rises in the cost of living are bound to happen or do you feel they can be avoided? e IN IN Marti tptfidini la inlwi tf wait-pii- 7 (antralt Fut la taller 1 HM manar Contlnu lt tvrthara lax Subatitwt aatitnal aala far carparatt iacama tax Before After Spa Midiection 34" Si IS tt IS tt SI IS 14 S4 tt After Spa Size 14 Size 10 "N' a - & ' - t Y' tf j. bK HF sw'v (7 s5'bx X - v, AN.'' - o Xs b Tijl S: y H' jA t) .. .
