WOODWARD Deseret News Business Editor NEW Get to work early and never be late, don't call attention to yourself too soon, don't goof off, and let them know you're not afraid of hard work. Sound like good advice for a new employe? It sure Is, and the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) hopes that by following such proletarian counsel that its members will be able to infiltrate Ame4ican business organizations this summer to spread their theories of violent dissent. The radical, g SDS has put out a remarkable "Organizer's Manual" for the summer "work-in- " which tells its members what jobs to look for, how to get them, what to expect and how to propagandise the "workers." I say it's remarkable because the manual, which was reprinted in the Conference Board Record, is at once cynical, arrogant, patronizing and, somehow, pathetic. left-win- I i. How They'll Do It ' f rt 3 , , ; ) 1 Getting A Job How should a good SDS member get a job? Here are a few suggestions: (1) don't mention you're a student, (2) say you've lone the same kind of work before and that you've also done heavy, manual labor, (3) Stay away from your drotft status, and if you have a dishonorable discharge, avoid mentioning it altogether or else lie about it, (4) Set your salary expectation a little below the new job's opening. (5) On the aptitude tests, "don't show off. In fact, If you're taking it with other "try to see bow far they're getting and adjust accordingly. If you do too well, they'll either be suspicious or want to use you in the front office." (6) start looking for work "it's bard to get a job if you start at 2 p.m." early (8) Don't wear a suit or tie or fancy dress, but "don't dress like a slob." (8) If you have to sign a form that you are noncommunist or nonsubversive, do so. But if the company is engaged in government work, you may be breaking the law. Check this out with the local SDS group beforehand. One interesting quote from the manual: "Don't be shocked by the racist remarks of the white workers, by confused political impressions, by pro-wtalk, by 'keeping up with the Joneses' chitchat. If the workers understood racism, the war, the capitalist class, middle class, morality, etc., we'd be on the way 'home' already." ar AcmeMk ; : 1 M F .90 AMetCI 1.90 A Amer Motor Am NtGas 2 APhoto .09t, A Smelt 1.90 Am Stand A Sugar 1.60 AmT&T 2.40 I -- 47-7' gall ' ,1 Bell&HII rNit Burtind 1.40 .60 Burrghs Camp S Can Pee CaroPL CarrierC Casel-11- ,is ,,si IKE ORR .80 CessnaA .80 C F I Sti .80 ChmSPI 1.20 SERVICE MGR. This assumption that the student automatically knows more than the guy who has been working all of his life is one of the most galling things about it. In a way, It's pathetic in that it reveals the true attitude of toward the "working class" that they these presume to guide. In fact, the SDS recruits may well end up learning It whale of a lot more than they'll ever teach. And that would be an accomplishment! . For example, it counsels him not to "feel compelled to give leadership on any and all questions," and suggests that they talk about possibilities of offering the workers assistance "in any struggles coming up in the future, on picket lines, demonstrations, even doing research for them." What's the purpose of all this? The SDS manual answers: "To bring out the relationship of Vietnam and the other imperialist wars to their (the workers) immediate demands, to the fact that they and their the sons di q in the war, that it is a war for the rich Class perspective. "And also, among white workers, the use of racism against their other interests. Black workers aren't 'threatening' their jobs. The boss is. Ile controls both. As long as workers are divided by race, union, sex, craft, nationality, it's easier for the boss to sit on them." And the manual cautions them about getting Involved In discussions with workers whose sons are in Vietnam and want to "suppol t them by going all out." "That's an emotional area in which it may be very hard to convince such a father that your line on supporting his son is correct," the manual says. , The SDS manual says nothing about violence, although the organization has been accused of planning just that. Instead it seems directed toward getting litOature passed out and developing contacts with sympathetic workers within the plants themselves. ? The SDS suggests that students from a group to collect information about possible jobs and to compare notes from those who do get In. It even suggests that someone be sent in to the plant first to find out about the placement tests and employe questionnaires. It also suggests that a front organization be set up to say that the 'student has worked there since graduating from high school. , CLOSINO QUOTATIONS An sales in hunoreds COO) oriiitted ex. cent for those designated (f) which are traded in 10 share lots and carried in foil.
