Profusion Of Colorful Blooms . By MAXINE MARTZ Deseret News Staff Writer i ' Its wildflower time in Utah again. Already the balsamroots are coloring the slopes of Parleys Canyon yellow, and white chokechtrry blossoms are m evidence all up and down the road. Bluebells were growing in profusion earlier this week, but they are giving away now to the blue and pink sticky geranium. Soon the bright of scarlet gilia will be added. Wild sweet orange-re- d peas were blooming in the mouth of Lambs Canyon this week and theres a dense patch of wild lily of the valley in George Washington Park. The nice thing about Utahs wildflowers is that they last all summer, with different ones making their appearance up the mountainsides as the snows melt away. One of the earliest is the yellow dogtooth violet, also known as the snow lily because it sometimes comes pushing p through the snow. It has already passed its peak at lower elevations, but will be growing in profusion on the upper slopes into June. Discovering and identifying flowers can become a fascinating hobby, especially if you combine it with photography. Wildflowers shouldnt be picked. They should be left for others to enjoy, but if you capture them on color slides you have them forever, and at the peak of their beauty. One of the best books to help with identification of flowers is A Field Guide to Rocky Mountain by John J. Craighead, Frank C. Craighead Jr., and Ray J. Davis. In addition to color photographs of 200 flowers, it contains descriptions, when and where to find them, and some interesting facts. Once you learn the common names of the flowers, you may want to go on and learn tne scientific names. From there on, all sorts of interesting things open up. For example, youll learn that the yellow fritillary is fritillaria pudica and that "pudica means bashful. And thats because the little yellow flowers hang downward. This is another early blooming flower and not too common. Ive only discovered it twice, once in the Uintas two or three years ago, and again early this month, blooming along with the dogtooth violets and bluebells near Cascade Springs not far from Wasatch Mountain State Park. at least as far as Another elusive fritillary Im concerned is the leopard lily. Its supposed to be found in the mouth of Lambs Canyon about -(his time of year, but so far my efforts to find it have been fruitless. But then, you wouldnt want to discover everything right away. Its better to have a goal. Its all the more exciting when you find it. Thats how it was when i first found the fairy . w Jp V W f H A pen-stem- Mountain bluebells brighten field. Chokecherries are at their peak. slipper three years ago growing in damp, cool ground back under the trees in the Uintas. The little d orchid is so delicate and pink, beautiful you can hardly believe it. Ive found it each year since usually around the first part of and each time there's been that same thrill June of discovery. They usually grow around decaying logs. If youre a camera fan, wear old clothes, because youll be throwing yourself on the ground and going into all kinds of contortions capturing these little beauties. Another orchid that likes damp places, but seems a little easier to find, is the white bog orchid. It has tiny white flowers growing on a stout green stem. I have found it at Albion Basin above Alta and on one of the trails off the road to Brighton. But the Mountain and coralroots are orchids still on the list. After studying the flowers for awhile, you will probably settle on your own favorites. Im still partial to elephanthead, a dense spike of deep pink Powers that look exactly like an elephants head, complete with long ears and a trunk curving upward. Its one o the first flowers I learned at Twin Lakes above Erighton and can usually be found in the great fields of flowers that bloom in August in Albion Basin and along the road to Mirror Lake in the Uintas. Another favorite is the white first found growing in the damp soil by a waterfall on Mt Timpanogos. Lambs Canyon has been called the flower garden of the Wasatch, but Millcreek Canyon and the hiking trails in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons offer al- single-flowere- ladys-slipp- 4410-308- 0 s, most as much variety in this area. Its a good idea to jot down the date and place you find some of the rarer flowers so you can find them again the next year. A week or two can make quite a difference in what you find, even at the same spot. If youre planning to take pictures, have a camera you can take closeup shots with. Later on you may want to add equipment to take even closer shots. If each had yielded $25, the two would have enjoyed a $1 million vacation. Crush Feature Overemphasized Three years ago my parents paid cash for some carpeting from a S.L. firm. It had a guarantee against matting. In six months it was flat. The factory representative okayed replacement. In less than a year it was matted. Again replacement was okayed with a better grade. If he is having problems, he may turn to drubs to eliminate those problems, he said. An annuiil report published by the Salt Lake City Pclice Department shows 8C5 reported runaway cases in 1968. This compares with 663 for 1JU. The report also shows that 303 boys and 340 girls were charged as runaways for the year. The largest number of runaways were between the ages of 14 and 16. What happens to teens after they leave home? First they look for a place to stay. For tills they turn to the house of a friend, an abandon building or, if they own a car, then that becomes their shelter. Their next concern is getting food. If they have no friends to rely upon and no job, then they must either beg or steal whatever they can for food. Capt. M. J. In many of the cases which we handle, we find that the runaway is a follower of the peaceful hippie.
