Can Stock Car Kings Repeat? By BRENT CHECKETTS A i8 Fairgrounds Speedway racing champion Dick Card defend his A title? Who will be the kingpin in the newly renovated B modified division? Will Bob Taylor and Jay Eaton once again light it out in the stock car class? Those are questions on the minds of local auto racing fans, and the answers to them will start to unfold Saturday night when the 1969 Fairgrounds Speedw ay racing season gets underway. New asphalt resurfacing, pit and a comImprovements pletely reorganized B modified division combine to make Speedway manager Ferrol Papworth optimistic about the upcoming season. He is especially excited about the B class. It eliminates such things as torsion bars, disc brakes, expensive mag wheels and wings and thereby allows more people to be competitive in the modified division at less expense to them, Papworth said. It should be a very and d division. A brief prospectus of the three different racing divi-- DIVISION Defending champion Dick Card will be back in his inch Chevy engine machine and should be a definite threat for another title. He may possibly change to a system which could make him that much tougher. A top contender should be Joel Terry, who came on strong last year in winning the final two main events and breaking the track record. Other top A drivers on hand Saturday night will be Mel Andrus, Nish, Terry Bobby Baker and Ron Dickinson. Dickinson will be driving a car he recently purchased from Dick Simon, who has given up oval racing for the sports car circuit. Last ypar's B champion, Dickinson will bear close watching in the A bracket this campaign. 327-cub- Tteve It :44 MEMORIAL Vuv?:, Hur.ter, M:t;nc,i; Jo.-.- n Poierson, s.venv'Y, Smith. p?rrff( Evan,.
