It was never designed that he should naturally do and love evil. -- Pres. immMutuiiUuiiiiiii!Uiniiimiiiiiiiii.!iM... This week in the life of President David O. McKay, from the pages of his "Daily Journal" kept by his personal secretary, Clare Middlemiss. The 1969 Hill Cumorah Pageant Americas Witness for Christ will be held July 28 through August 2, according to the Church Information Service. ! - AjiU 3, 1921 President McKay received manifestation of gift of interpretation of tongues while addressing saints in Puketapu, Waikato, New Zealand. One of the most important events on my world tour of the missions of the Church was the gift of interpretation of the English tongue given to the saints of New Zealand at a session of their conference. The service was held in a large tent. Hundreds of earnest men and women gathered in anxious anticipation of seeing and hearing an Apostle of the Church, the first or.e to visit that land. Looking over the great assemblage and contemplating the great expectations that ' filled their hearts, I realized how inadequate I might satisfy the ardent desire of their souls, .and I yearned most earnestly for the gift of tongues that I might be able to speak to them .In their native language. Until that moment, I had not given much serious thought to the gift of tongues, but on that occasion I wished with all my heart that I might be worthy of that divine power. ' "From the depth of my soul, I prayed for divine assistance. When I arose to give my ad-- f dress, I said to Brother Stuart Meha, oic inter-- ' n pretor, that I would speak without his translat- ing, sentence by sentence, and theri to the audience I continued: I wish, oh how I wish, I ' fcad the power to speak to you in your own tongue, that I might tell you wnat is in my heart, but since I hfve not the gift, I pray and I ask you to pray that you might have the spir--Interpretation, of discernment, that you it of understand at least the spirit while I am may . speaking, ami theiryou will g?t the words and the thought when Brother Meha Interprets. My sermon lasted 40 mlnutesand I have never addressed a more attentive, a more res- - pec tf ul audience. My listeners were in perthis I knew when I saw tears fect rapport in their eyes. Some of them, perhaps most of them, who did not understand English, had the gift of interpretation. Brother Meha gave a synopsis of the speech in Maori. During the translation, some of the Maoris corrected him ot. some parts, showing that they had a clear conception of what had been said in English.
