Deseret News Business Editor After 20 years of massive research and development, the nuclear power industry has finally reached its commercial stage and le rapidly approaching the billion-dolllevel. That eAsessment, by an Easteru investment counseling firm, reaffirms what many Utahns have been hoping for. This state, as a principal source of uranium to fuel the reactors, stands much to gain from the maturity of atomic power. Moreover, Utah is in the enviable position of being able to take the best of both sides in the battle between coal and nuclear energy for producing electricity. full-sca- le ar Cheap Coal There probably won't be many nuclear power plants built in this area because the state has such vast reserves of coal that this is a cheaper source of fuel. The David L. Babson and Co. of Boston has published a staff letter examining the prospects for nuclear power and they find them heartening. However, they also point out some of the problems that have to be overcome. the next 10 years, of U.S. generating capacity is expected to be nuclear powered. The real acceleration will start in the early d 1970's, when most plants will start up. one-four- th newly-ordere- What will this mean for uranium! The Atomic Energy Commission figures the cumulative requirements for uranium between 1966 and 1980 will be at least 250,000 tons. Present domestic reserves available at a price below $10 a pound amount to about 200,000 tons, and annual production capacity is 14,000 tons. In contrast, yearly output of 38,000 tons will be needed by 1980. The big one Is that the actual construction cost of an atomic plant Is currently 25 to 40 per cent more than for a conventional generating facility. Moreover, there have been unexpectedly high costs and technical delays in building large nuclear plants. The cost estimates have gone from an original level of around $110 per kilowatt to $150 to $170 per kilowatt. More advanced, tors would provide more fuel savings, but any economically justified unit is considered at least a decade away. This means the equipment pmducers would rather stick to their present designs until they can recoup at least part of their investment to date. In spite of these problems, Babson concludes that the new source of energy should ultimately stimulate' the economy by further lowering the cost of electricity. And the search for uranium will stimulate Utah's economy. fast-breed- 1.20 .25 1.20 .50 2.40 1.20 BrnStood 112 Cose1.111 By 1980, some sort of a milestone should be reached. At that time, nuclear energy will be producing as much electricity OA coal, which now has by far the giant's share of the market. This bedoesn't mean there will be less coal used cause the actual amount of electricity required will be much greater than it is now.
