Which brings to mind an old saying that you can get so close to the woods you can't see the trees That may be the other pennant contenders What they overlook is that greatest Yankee attribute — organization No matter what you feel about the club it has that Sure other clubs have g farm systems too but somehow that Yankee organization brings out the quality It s an old saw among Players that even putting on fa" the Yankee uniform makes you a better performer have that They'll iwv opu iiiiea next season and probably quite capably Just how well you will be able to tell by the cries coming out of Cleveland By Hugh Fullerton Jr NEW YORK Jan 4 ( AP) — The World series movie was previewed with refreshments) yesa terday and it seems that Lew did a good job of getting it ready before baseball starts for 1952 It's getting so hardly have time for the winterthey knife and fork campaign what with the Browns starting spring drills Feb 1 and most of the other clubs trailing only by a couple of weeks — not to mention the big leaguers who work at "schools' or other g That projects brings up again the question What is a "season?" Maybe Americans'aren't the ones to wave the flag for pure amateurism in that the college sports picture is so clouded by semi-pro- s and outright pros posing as simonpures that you can hardly see it on a clear day But according to our definition an amateur is an athlete who performs without remuneration either directly or indirectly We know of a golfer who for years refrained from filing his entry for national amateur events because he was em ployed by a sporting goods concern and didn't want to embarrass the UGA by forcing it to make a ruling on his status Question Here This man was a good promotion man and undoubtedly could have held his job if he couldn't hit par with a shotgun but the assumption was that he was employed because of his ability as a player Some years ago Gus Moreland won the golf tournament and the prize was an automobile valued at about $3000 He declined to accept the car knowing that in doing se he would put the pro label on himself So Sedgman's acceptance if by proxy of a cash fund with the blessing of the amateur tennis fathers is a little puzzling although it is appreciated that Australian amateur rules might be a little different from our own Why they should be different is something else again as an amateur is an amateur and a pro is a pro any way you look at it The U S tennis officials consider that Australia's amateur problem is its own affair and by that reasoning it is assumed that if the Australians wanted to pay their players weekly wages we still would compete with them on an amateur basis Different Angle We wonder what would happen if Sedgman was presented a rich purse year after year for remaining amateur although it is admitted that this year there is what might be called an extenuating circumstance A guy just don't get married every year although a few make a brave attempt to keep up that pace The Australians at least are completely frank about the situation and no pun on Frank is intended They could have raised a fund without any publicity and slipped him the cash behind a tombstone at midnight Or have accepted expense accounts which would keep a small army in fodder for years There unquestionably is quite a bit of quiet subsidization of amateurs in this country and that doesn't mean just college athletes Many an amateur boxing tournament has been held with the win ners presented watches with the works removed and a nice wad of bills stuffed inside the casing e And amateur tennis is d business practically a for the stars who travel the world over living on the fat of the land on expense accounts just as fat It is condoned as there is nothing against an amateur accepting expenses Possibly it all simmers down to the old definition of an' amateur athlete as one who won't take a check There are so many ways an amateur can make a living at his sport without revealing the source of his income Anyway the pros as mentioned probably are considering turning amateur although there may be one drawback Maybe they don't feel it is worthwhile to get married MISSOULA Mont Jan 4 TAP)— just to get the money A dozen Grizzlies leave today for Logan Utah to play their first Skyline conference
