appearing on the program was Capt D B Ballantyne head of the Ogden police department's uniformed division who outlined to his listeners some of the inside workings of the department Sgt Garside said the dope problem in Ogden although serious was not as bad in Ogden as it has become nationally although there is much evidence that it might become worse The sergeant took his listeners behind the scenes of a typical teenage group that is hustling narcotics He explained in detail how boys and young men would solicit girls to go in doctors" offices and fake illness so that the doctor would prescribe drugs Meet With Boys When the girls would secure the drugs they would meet with the boys in a house and prepare the material for use The officer had the actual equipment used by the narcotics users which he displayed: Sgt Garside traced the movement of narcotics from the west coast through Ogden to Kansas City and back to Ogden and said the three main drugs evident here were opium from which morphine ii made: cocaine and marijuana He told the group of four young Ogden boys who had been addicted to narcotics through the actions of an older man recently convicted in the district courts AH of the boys of the group were nusay atmetic youngsters and they were forced to give up good paying jobs to take something less strenuous because of their weakened physical condition prevalent problem of the local police department was the problem of drunkenness He said during 1951 thus far the police had arrested 2409 men and 99 women for drunkenness He credited Alochblics Anonymous with helping the situation about 30 percent Capt Ballantyne said the experiment tried by Ogden City of stiffening the drunk ordinances had no effect on the situation "The only solution we
