Under present plans the children will remain under study by doctors throughout their grade school and high school years They are children whose mothers were instructed not to feed them by the clock — but when they apTheir parents peared to be hungry were encouraged to pick them up and fondle them when they cried unduly —and not let them "cry it 1 out" Own Development They are children whose mothers were told that the rocking chair is not an antique They are children whose mothers were told to allow them to work out their own toiler and other elementary training habits according to apparent bodily needs and capabilities And a majority of them were breastfed babies to start with medical center This world-fame- d in which they live offers an unusual opportunity for this sort of program — because practically all of the children born here are under uniform medical supervision In fact 95 per cent of Rochester's babies are born in the same hospital — St Mary's The project — known as the "Rochester Child Health Institute"— is directed by a small central staff h headed by Dr C Anderson professor of pediatrics Mayo foundation Its research activities are financed by the Mayo association The preventive medicine and educational phases are implemented by the central staff the health department of Rochester or by physicians of the Mayo clinic Cooperating in the programs are the schools and the nursery school board Five Categories The program has five categories: 1 Pre-natcare — designed to set the proper mental and emotional environment for the unborn baby by giving instructions to the prospective mother andn father 2 Care of the new-borAfter the birth of the baby an attempt is made to teach each mother something about the problems she will meet when she 'leaves the hospital Breast feeding is recommended 3 "Well baby' care Preventive medical care is provided at frequent intervals in public and private clinical facilities for babies less than two years of age Care consists of periodic physical and general examinations immunization procedures and giving advice to mothers as to habit formation and general physical care Care 4L care Physical and psychological care is provided at the "well baby" clinics and psychological study throughout grade institute office for children of Aid-ric- al months service between Sept 16 1940 and June 24 1948 (the date the until they become 20 whichever is first College students are deferred for the duration of the academic year in a child by means of care given him in infancy? 3 Can better human efficiency —mental as well as physical —be develqped in a child by allowing him to "set his own pace" in infancy? 4 Can training in such basic things as eating sleeping and toilet habits be tuned successfully to the way each individual grows and develops— rather than ruled by the clock or typewritten rules? and believes Dr Aldrich hope-— that the answer is "yes" to all questions But he emphasizes that the study now the philosophy of the program in termittently for about a week an aritcle in tne American Journal of the Diseases of Children In the past he said "many of the personality problems parents have been up against with children have come about because they have failed to adjust their child to the newly discovered facts of growth" "We have expected young children to behave in ways for which they were not yet ready" he continued "Most of us for instance have tried to make them eat from a spoon before their tongue and lip muscles have been developed properly We have tried to 'train' them against the current of their natural development This is illustrated in premature attempts to train for bowel and bladder con- four-foote1 as j he explained Every three or four years a moose is reported in this vicinity and usually they are about that age One such animal he continued spent a winter in Logan canyon near Tony grove and later was photographed swimming Bear lake Some time ago one was killed in the Southern part of the state between Provo and Vernal That is the most southerly penetration The animals usually reported the northern climes Rasprefer mussen added According to an informant he was discovered when a farmer investigated to see why his cows wouldn't remain in their pasture It developed that the moose had been chasing them out of what he probably considered to be his domain acquired by conquest Whether his intentions were amorous or aggressive was not explained It also was reported that the individualistic animal had chased one man to his car after the latter approached too close However Arlo Atoms May Yield Secret Of Life's Start on Earth trol "As a result children have become confused resistant and subject to emotional storms We call such children 'spoiled' They by an arson ist" he said "We know who set them and are trying to get evi dence that will stand up in court" John Craig state fire marshal made the announcement at his Springfield 111 office shortly after it was disclosed that five fires broke out yesterday at Willey's new home Craig said that Willey and his wife Lulu were in the clear" and not involved in the arson Began August 7 The fires DOgan Aug 7 bursting from the wallpaper of Willey's farm house and the walls of his barns A series of more than 200 fires of mysterious origin were reported Finally the farm house burned down Aug 14 The next day a barn burned down The sec ond barn burned down Aug 19 and the Willeys packed up and moved They said the first fire in their new home broke out about 1 pm yesterday "It started in a kitchen cupboard while I was canning tomatoes" Mrs Willey said Craig said that Deputy Fire Marshal John Burgard had estab lished definitely that the fires were the work of an arsonist Burgard set a trap for the firebug and thus learned the arsonist s identity l raig said Refuses Lie Test The arsonist refused to take a lie detector test when questioned he said Burgard said he planned to call in the state bureau of criminal in vestigation The Willey's new hoe is located on the farm of Jim Thompson four miles from their own farm Burgard went to the house to investigate after the first fire was reported "While I was standing there talking to Willey" Burgard said "I smelled smoke I ran inside and there were two fires burning in the wallpaper and the kitchen and a bedroom" He and Willey put out all of the fires quickly The Willeys said they were very "jittery" because the fires still plagued them Cant Figure it Out "I'm upset about it all" Mrs Willey said "I just can't figure it out" The Willeys said that fires shot out of the yesterday's wall "like lighted gas out of a blow torch" Experts had branded the original fires as the work of arsonists but had not been able to determine the arsonist s identity When the fires destroyed Willey's home he and his wife moved into a tent in the yard Then while officials investigated and curiosity seekers looked on the barns burned down The mystery
