Show ' THE OGDEN (UTAH) STANDARD-EXAMINESATURDAY EVENING AUGUST 21 1948 Burgess Bedtime Stories R The Real Bigness of Buster Bear Uncle Ray's Corner A Little Saturday Talk: Phases of the Moon A reader who does not give his name writes: "Will you please explain the moon changes? Since we always see the same side of the moon How can it be of quarter size at one time half size later then full size?" The moon always keeps the same size though there are times when it looks larger than at other times Even the full moon seems to be of a different size in one position in the sky than when it is in another position but that is only seeming The moon's changes from quarter to half to full are called "phases" From new moon to new moon there is a period of about four weeks or close to a month One half of the moon is always lighted up by the sun and one half always faces the earth That might make a person think we should always see a full moon or a quarter moon The lighted half of the moon however keeps changing The moon twists around or rotates once while it makes a circle around the earth At a given spot on the moon there is daylight for two weeks and night for two weeks While the moon is circling the earth there are times when its lighted half is facing away from us and we fail to see any moon at all in the sky A week later we see enough of the part which is moon lighted to give us a quarter we see Another week passes and LEGAL NOTICES the entire lighted half of the moon The lighted half is all we can and we call this a full moon If we could get to the other side of a full moon we should find that side dark You might test this out with an electric light a baseball and the head of a friend Let the light represent the sun the baseball the moon and the head of your friend the earth Slowly move the baseball in a circle around your friend's head If the rest of the room is dark you should be able to see how the lighting on the baseball (or moon) changes from the viewpoint of your friend as the ball circles his head UNCLE RAY Use This Coupon to Join the New " Serapbook Club! They may In fact some of the biggest people are the smallest They are big in body but small in nature small in heart and feeling doers of mean things And by the same rule some small people really are very big people Now as I have said Buster Bear is very big but no one knew how big he was until Whitefoot the You Wood Mouse found it out know how tiny Whitefoot is He isn't so very much bigger than one of Buster's toes Beside him Buster is a tremend-dou- s giant Yet once as you and I know Whitefoot actually frightened Buster and made him run That was because Buster had already been badly frightened by Farmer Brown's boy and his nerves were very jumpy But when Whitefoot told how he had made Buster run no one believed him They believed that Whitefoot thought he had frightened Buster and this seemed to them the greatest Joke ever was And so they all teased Whitefoot by laughing at him and pretending that they were terribly afraid of him until Whitefoot was so miserable that he lost his appetite and couldn't sleep You know there is nothing hurts quite so much as being made fun of and laughed at Of course in time Buster heard about it and he laughed too He knew that Whitefoot's story was true but he didn't let on You see he knew that if he did the laugh would be on him and he didn't want to be laughed at any more than did Whitefoot But it didn't once enter his head that Whitefoot was feeling so badly about it until one day he happened over near Whitefoot's house Suddenly he heard a little saueaky voice sav: "Oh dear! Oh dear! I wish I were dead! I wish I were dead Buster stopped short and looked up with a funny look of surprise on his face There looking out of a little round hole near the top of a small stump sat Whitefoot the Wood Mouse and it was verv clear that Whitefoot was so busy feeling sorry for himself that he hadn't seen Buster Bear at all "Woof woof! What is all this?" demanded Buster in his deep rumbly-grumbl- y voice With a little squeal of fright Whitefoot dodged back out of sight but in a minute he popped out again "It's all your fault" he sobbed "I wish I were dead I've half a mind to come down right now and let you catch me" Wrinkles of sheer good nature made puckers around Buster's eyes "I wouldn't do that" said he mildly 'Tm not feeling hungry for mouse just now and I would rather L D S istratrix Published Aug 1948 28 --Sept 21 4 a I O j good-nature- ot lSJf"B V 'l DINNER AT EIGHT THEN? tm i Daisy can't understand people who talk about doin' things in moderation She says It has been her experience that fan an' moderation don't mix ' 8 I FORGET GLITTER FOR6ET DON'T 1 THAT SONNY YOU MEAN V RIGHT THAT NECKTIE STEVE ?
