Though we received this information after the auctions were held, maybe interested farmers can get in the next round of sales. The Wisconsin Extension Service pioneered hay auctions in 1983. Private companies now conduct auctions throughout Wisconsin, as well as other midwestem states. The concept was introduced three years ago. about Utah to Hay is Utahs No. 1 cash crop, but its one of the most poorly marketed commodities we have, said Dean Parker of Dean H. Parker and Associates, a Logan company that handled the auctions. Utahs livestock producers would be in terrible straits without livestock markets, so we thought, why not develop hay markets for hay producers, Parker said. There seems to be a need and were trying to fill that need. Utahs hay production projected at more than 2.2 million tons this year, ranks 25th in the country. California is number one, producing nine million tons. Cash receipts for Utah hay for 1986, which is the latest year for which figures are available, totaled $41 million. 7.4 percent of the total for all Utah agriculture. Adding the value of hay grown and fed on the farm brings total hay value to more than $150 - million. The auctions are designed to help establish a more orderly market for this large Utah crop. Lane Parker, of the auction company says that growers deliver theirhay.ora representative sample, to a central location. The hay is sampled and tested for nutrient and fiber content, using spectroscopy. This level of quality will determine the hays value or bid price, which helps to set a market level for the commodity. We hope to interest the little guy who normally doesnthave access to larger buyers, Parker said, adding that auctions are open to large sellers as well. At the beginning of the near-infrar- auctions, specialists from Utah State University discussed using hay in dairy, beef and horse management, and packaging hay to improve marketing. The auctions were held in Tremonton, Cedar city and Salina. The auction company hopes to hold larger auctions next spring when the volume of hay for sale is large enough to draw locally and out of state buyers. Parker said the idea was tested in Idaho without success, but he is confident that the auction theory will work in Utah. His company conducts auctions in 30 states each year, primarily selling livestock. Buyers or sellers who want more information about participating in Utahs hay auctions may call Parker at 752-7701.
