Show The Salina Sun SAYS EDUCATOR Parents are the most influential teachers The home is the first and most important school, and parents are the most influential teachers, according to Hal M. Jensen, superintendent of San Juan schools. What parents do to help and encourage students to do well at school is more important than anything the schools can do. Most parents want to be involved in their childrens school experience. The nature of this involvement and the ongoing relationship tat ought to exist between parents and schools needs to be examined renewed and improved. Some parents say they feel uncomfortable when visiting the schools. Some teachers say they feel defensive when parents come to visit Both of these reactions are inappropriate and need to be changed. Research data indicates that parents must be actively involved with the schools to maintain and improve student performance. The involvement must be a three way relationship. The parents, students and teacher must all accept some specific responsibilities. Following are some suggestions: The parent can: Ask the child about school every day. Ask about homework and assist with homework when needed. Monitor and restrict the amount of TV watching; Work closely with the teacher, communicating often to see that the child is progressing normally. The student should: Be on time to class. Attend 95 percent of the time; Finish homework on time and see that it is handed in. Have the necessary classroom supplies. The Teacher should: Increase the quality and intensity of teaching. Keep track of student achievement. Communicate with parents and students; Consciously motivate each student. All parents should understand that they do have an invitation to visit the schools. It is more than an invitation. It is a responsibility. Class periods set at NS High School Class periods at NSHS have seen some new changes at NSHS.
