The day following Christmas, I merrily set off for work, complete with a dab of my new parfum. The Boss had received a new computer program we wanted to have up and running before the new year began. The computer room was small. Just room for the Boss, the computer, a tiny desk, and me. We had worked for a while, when the Boss suddenly turned to me and said Do you detect a strange odor in here this morning? Trying to keep my cahn, I said, Gosh, Boss, I dont smell a thing. We continued working. I dont know what the smell is, but its making me sick! How about opening the front door for a few minutes. smell too pleasant air this place out! I have never been one to drench myself in sweet scented toilet waters or perfumes. Not that dontlike smelling sweet, but I figure that if the Man Upstairs wanted me to smell like a rose, I would have been bom with thorns. Back in the days when such things were first invented, we have to remember that there was no such thing as deodorant, or great clothes detergents that made clothes smell fresh and clean. Bathtime was likely once a week, and when folks reached the end of a long, hard days work in the summer sun, they likely didnt loveliness 1 Stuttering my thanks, opened the unusually shaped decanter. An overwhelming scent nearly overpowered me. Oh, they all do that when you open them for the first time, she dutifully explained. Oh, no, thats not the way, she continued, as I put a tiny drop on my wrist. Its lovely, I gasped, headfor the bathroom. Even after a ing maximum amount of scrubbing, I could still detect the stuff hours later. Perhaps one of the reasons Ive not been addicted to perfumes is that though I would slather on a goodly amount, the scent generally seemed to disappear before I reached the front door. But this tiny bottle, with its fascinating name, for some reason stayed - and stayed - and stayed. That evening, even after caring for the horses, I had to avert my head to the left to avoid the waves of exotic devoted pal. Rags is quite a character. He has long straggly hair that covers his eyes if we let it, and he often bangs into things as he races to greet his loved ones. Hi, Rags, I called as I headed for the house. Rags hurried to my side, then abrupdy put on the brakes. He raised his nose into air, sniffing rapidly, then turned and dove beneath the Blazer. Now really. Rags, is that any to way greet a pal? Im the one who feeds you every day, remember? Ifit wasnt for me, youd be in the great fire hydrant park in the sky right now! Come on, boy lets see ifwe can find you a bone. . . But it was no use. Maybe someday, when no one is home, I will be brave enough to spritz on a drop or two, and take a stroll through the garden. Who knows! It could turn out to be useful for keeping garden pests and mosquitos at bay!
