day — no matter w ho we are or w hat we do for a living No matter where we live or what we believe in our lives get more and more complicated with each passing day The primary source of this complication is that there is only so much land and the resources it provides The resources I'm talking about are not limited to food and fiber production or minerals or lumber or forage or any of the many renewable or natural resources Even though these are paramount to our existence there are other things that are of great value to the human soul that are also shrinking le and becoming less available Things like privacy solitude "secret" hunting or fishing places quiet uncluttered views from home windows unbusy phone lines and being able to act without offending someone for one reason or another The list could go on and on but it would only reinforce the fact that trying to hang on to what was or trying to keep things the way they were is a lost cause There is an old axiom that says "You can ever-expandi- 64 48 43 39 34 33 33 33 33 27 25 needs They switch food preferences to that which is the most abundant or available In some cases it al- most looks as if they use man's rules regulations and laws against By Bert Lowry never go back" That becomes more and more evident as our population continues to gobble up land and resources just to accommodate shelter and food for the masses We are spoiled living here in the Reaper Realm because time moves more slowly here What was remains a little longer and existing traditions and activities arc able to be maintained But even here we see the remorseless wheels of change grind into the dust that which was The condition of being of one mind or of most everyone having the same goals seems to have dis A LEAGUE Hal Marquardson B territories they simply start using the new buildings to fit their own l appeared from the scene A mobile nation with almost un- limited freedoms guarantees that new folks and new ideas will show up on the scene or old folks who have left will return with new ideas and will challenge the status quo The women's movement and the rewriting of history by the entertainment media guarantees that which was can never be again For whatever reason nations and societies change Our world is in a state of constant flux Human becomings would do well to look to the wildlife kingdom for examples of how to deal with or manage change Those who are limited in the capabilities to adapt or be flexible in their behavior tend to be washed from the picture Those who take things as they come adapt to the change and are flexible in their dealings with their new way of life do very well Three prime examples are the coyote the raccoon and ole robin redbreast These generalists continue to expand their ranges and numbers throughout the US Canada and Mexico If man moves into their previously unoccupied Ladies Golf Meeting Set their makers If you’ve ever seen a coyote trotting down a busy thoroughfare in a huge city as it heads toward a place where it can get a drink out of a swimming pool after it steals the food from the family dog or cat you'd understand what Fm saying Raccoons do the same and raise their litters in chimneys under porches or almost anywhere Robins now build their nests on in or around any and all buildings or in shrubs trees vines or even clothesline posts They will congregate by the hundreds in almost any kind of fruit tree until it is stripped bare They also have no compunctions about adding insult to injury by depositing a mess (the color of what they've been eating) all over everything As a species we human becomings are prone to try to protect everything and everybody from cradle (nest) to grave (expiration) This tendency is one of the complications we impose on ourselves The "survivors" are quick to capitalize on this with lawsuits which are well calculated to set them up for life and beyond and which ruins the lives of those who lose the suit More and more it seems that good common sense reason and logic are being replaced in our society We can't "go back" but it seems to me we could do a better job of making change embrace reason and logic fast-movi-
