Proceeds will finance research at veterinary schools into health problems of horses. In Rides for Research, horsemen obtain sponsors who pledge various amounts of money per mile ridden. A total of 150 groups throughout the United States organized Rides for Research in 1975 and 1976, raising more than $75,000 to d of the catchables planted are caught by fishermen. Low water conditions have made it necessary this year for stocking programs to be altered in some instances; redesignating some fingerling plants and stocking more catchables to water that will hold sufficient water to support the populations. Koosharem Reservoir anfor were glers, example, treated to some 10,000 catch-abl- e rainbow trout, planted in addition to the normal quota of fish. Flaming Gorge and Starvation Reservoirs together received some 420,000 finger-ling- s in the same period. Most of the stocking efforts utilize rainbow trout, but grayling, kokanee, brown, cutthroat, lake and brook trout are also stocked. Fisheries managers utilize the natural production potential of reservoirs by planting fmgerlings and allowing them to grow into larger fish. Although this is true of most reservoirs in the state, some heavily fished spots are also supplemented with stocks of catchables. Since few streams in Utah have sufficient habitat to produce sufficient numbers of sizable fish naturally, catchables are typically planted to provide anglers with fishing opportunity and a relatively good chance of success. Over a three-yea- r period, studies show that approximately 75 percent fund-raisin- squirrels bury nuts for the winter, they are an important aid to seeding forests.
