Public flfleeifagi Will Explore iySenafti Culfary Wafer Options Mantis water problems in a period of drought will be explored at a public meeting arranged for by the city administration Thursday night at 7:30 in the Sanpete County courthouse. We want to discuss the current situation and some possible measures we might want to take to alleviate it, Mayor Frank Wanlass said. One of those measures could be the replacement of the culinary w'ater line from Burnt Hill Flat to the springs in Hougaard Fork. This pipeline, about a mile and a half long, was not replaced two years ago when the city was engaged in a ,, major construction project in the canyon because sufficient funds were not available. The section is now about 40 years old, develops frequent leaks which waste water and causes city employees much additional work durijig the busy season, Mayor Wanlass said. Its replacement would cost something in excess of $100,000 according to the estimates. In a meeting with Gov. Scott Matheson, we were told that if the project is undertaken, the state will make an outright grant to it of $25,000 from emergency funds, Mayor Wanlass said. "We would have to raise most of the cost, however, through the sale of revenue bonds. This would require a special election." Other items on the meeting's agenda will be possible rationing of culinary water, conservation of the available supply and the development of the new well in the mouth of Manti Canyon. Although the water from this well, because of its sulphur content, is not suitable for culinary use, it can perhaps be traded to the irrigation company for water that could be put into the city system, the mayor said. of Coon, the enfirm which has gineering handled other city water projects, will be present to assist with the discussion.
