A competency exam testing students for minimal skills in mathematics has been adopted by the South Sanpete School District board of education. Gunnison Valley High School and Manti High School juniors will take the test at the end of the school year. An average score of 80 per cent or higher w ill be considered satisfactory. Students who do not pass the examination at the end of their junior year will be required to take a full semester (two quarters) of math for adult living during the first half of their senior year. Those who still fail the exam will then be required to remain in the math class for the remainder of the year. The examination was developed by a math committee which was appointed by the district to determine the mathematical competencies that high school graduates should possess, according to Superintendent Ron Everett. The test deals only with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and ratio, he explained. Parents who would like to see what the exam contains can do so by visiting the two high schools or the district office, he said. He added that the exam complies with the new' state requirements for high school graduation. A year ago, Superintendent Everett said, the board of education went through a goal setting program with the general public throughout the district. This program revealed, he said, that parents wanted the schools to reexamine the basic concepts in education. They wanted the high school graduates to be competent in certain fundamental areas. The board feels that the math exam is a beginning for setting minimal competencies for graduation in the basic skills areas and has instructed the district administrators to develop a similar exam in language arts, Mr. Everett said.
