Personality Profile (Editors Note: The following is the fourth in a series of five articles offering a short profile of the members of Utahs Wildlife Board.) LELAND S. SWANER Lcland S. Swaner is a Salt Lake City native who has served on the Wildlife Board since 1970. He represents District 3. which comprises the area of Salt Lake, Summit. Tooele and Utah counties. He has served as of the board during most of his tenure. Swaner received a degree in economics from Stanford University and returned to Salt Lake City to enter business. He currently own an industrial development center which he started in 1948 with a couple of buildings and has now expanded to over 140 companies. His interest in the out of doors began when he was a boy scout. He became an Eagle scout and went on in later years to be a scoutmaster. In the ensuing years, his interest in wildlife has taken him to places like Alaska and Africa. During those trips, he has observed wildlife management and conditions in other parts of the world. Mr. Swaner indicates that one of the keys to the future of wildlife in Utah, is for all components of the industrial-resources complex to retain the proper balance of interests. There will be conflicts between resources and industry in the future. We will need to work toward minimizing those conflicts." He views his participation on the Wildlife Board as one way of helping to maintain an equilibrium. Industry is beginning to recognize the value of wildlife and other natural resources, according to Swaner, and is starting to plan those values into their financial outlines. In addition, the businessman sees Utah's rural areas becoming subject to industrial pressures more slowly than other states. He feels this is good for wildlife.
