Show Wild Blue Yonder Holds Fascination for Hang Glider by Brace Jennings wild blue yonder became more real. He graduated to a hang glider, after reading about hang gliding in books and magazines. He bought his first hang glider with the $500 hed saved from his paper route. Constructed of aluminum tubing with a dacron sail, it measured 16 feet from nose to tail and had a 21 foot wing span. He took his first lessons from a professional pilot one Saturday at the Point of the Mountain. A few feet first, and then a few feet more, and then The wild blue yonder sky with its that boundless islands of clouds, its winds and its rains, its snows and its storms has long had a special fascination for Roger Peterson. Like most little boys he first tried to explore it from tree branches and roof tops and high hills. And then he began to explore it with kites and with paper airplanes. Two years ago when he was 16 Rogers exploration of the a flight perhaps a quarter minute long. His first flight in Manti was low off the Sheep Trail, and he arrived safely at the bottom of the hill east of the highway. Since then Roger has made about a hundred flights over the Sanpete Valley. One took him off the top point of the Sheep Trail, at an elevation of around 8,000 feet. Ridge lift the upthrust of the air when a wind reaches the mountain and turns upward carried him up another 1000 feet. He then executed figure 8s in I' ,c s - TT-- ' 3, w-- v -- rch V', v , - :: W 3; A; w a slow descent for 55 minutes before landing in the field east of the county maintenance The sky was still shop. but the he says, bright, ground was beginning to darken and its risky to land in the dark. That remains his longest, flight 67 minutes in the air. Another flight, during the county fair, began on the Face, took him along the mountain to the M and then down the canyon and over the grandstand into a field north of Manti. There his mother was waiting to pick him up. The Face and the Sheep Trail along with a high point on the West Mountain are his favorite take off. points. His flights from the West Mountain position take him across the Gunnison Reservoir. He is able to see Sterling in the distance, and the cars moving' along Highway 89, as he soars 1000 feet above the water. As he soars, Roger looks for hawks circling in the distance, because he knows they have discovered a thermal and are- - riding it slowly in the air. Sometime soon Roger would plans to leave from the Face, follow the contour of the mountain, taking advantage of the ridge lift, and come down, after a 35 mile ride, somewhere around Hilltop. That will be his record for the time. But it wont be anything like the world record for hang gliding: 13 hours in the air and 47 miles in flight.
