The known as is caused by the disease larvae of an organism called spathaceum Diplostomum which destroys eye tissues. Studies at Strawberry Reservoir in Wasatch County show infections in rainbow trout rose from 75 percent in June to 98 percent in November. Cutthroat trout infections rose from 48 percent in June to 67 percent in August. De. James R. Palmieri, a parasitologist doing research at post-doctor- al BYU, and Dr. Richard A. Heckmann, associau professor of zoology and a specialist in ichthyology, said a sample study at Otter Creek Reservoir in Piute County last August showed 100 percent of the rainbow trout were infected and a sampling at Nine Mile Reservoir near Manti in December showed about 95 percent of the rainbows were infected. Outbreaks have also been reported in Colorado, North Dakota and Washington. The disease is much more prominent than we thought, and it is on the increase, Dr. It is very Heckmann said. possible that higher mammals including man could become infected with this fluke. He said research by other scientiests indicates the fluke can live in the eyes of reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals. Dr. Palmieri said he is studying a special protozoan parasite which might control the disease by attacking the fluke before it gets into fish. Unlike other proposed control methods such as chemically treating the water, the protozoa do not harm animal or plant life. This protozoan has proven successful in laboratory experiments in Michigan, and Dr. Palmieri hopes to find i T (Covered Pvt&iny motor lodges Present this Coupon for Discount: $2.00 for Double CHILDREN UNDER 18 FREE how effective it is in ponds, reservoirs and lakes. Dr. Heckmann explained that the disease occurs only in in reservoirs and lakes--nstreams. The life running cycle begins when the eggs pass from the intestines of birds such as gulls into reservoirs or lakes. Free - swimming larvae develop in two to three weeks and penetrate the livers of snails. Within six weeks these release free -sporocysts swimming organisms which penetrate the gills, skin and eyes of fish, he said. Sometimes fish acquire the flukes directly by eating snails. The flukes migrate through the blood stream to the eyes and the eventually cause lenses to become opaque, thus blinding the fish. In some cases where as many as 400 to 1,000 flukes have been found in one eye, the eye ruptures. Eventually the birds eat the infected fish and this completes the life cycle of the fish-eatin- g (cer-caria- e) fluke. Drs. Heckmann and mieri plan to survey lakes and reservoirs throughout Utah to determine the full extent of the disease, and they hope to develop effective means of controlling it through the use of the special proPal- Tara Lyn and Tiffaney 110 50. x 60 W. x 70 14 835-952- FOR SALE: Trade Farm Hobby Crafts in our home 450 So. 2nd East, Ephraim, Plaster items; doll parts; feathers; beads; jewelry parts; foam shapes; gifts; many other craft supplies Open 9 to 6 Tues. through Mrs. Jay V. These species were found to have higher amounts of lead than other waterfowl found on Utahs marshes in 1973s studies. Other birds were examined during the hunt. Biologists found the lead intake among redheads, canvasbacks and mallards is generally higher in Utah than in other areas of the United States. I think the American public is sick and tired of hearing time after time that another criminal is out on bond without serving any time for committing a crime with a firearm, Rich added. There is a national trend by some lawmakers to pass additional legislation aimed at the law abiding, firearms-ownin- g public, rather than facing the misdeeds of the criminals who use firearms in the commission of a crime. Lets enforce the laws we now have on the books and lets get the criminals off the streets and behind bars where they belong, Rich concluded. for the use of firearms in the commission of a crime, we have asked for enforcement of the thousands of laws on the books, we have asked for an end to plea bargaining in crimes of violence, we have asked that firearms be kept out of the hands of convicted felons, drug addicts, habitual drunkards, fugitives from justice, mental incompetents and juvenile delinquents, Rich said of NltAs continuing efforts for crime control. But what do we get? Repeated attempts to regulate the honest law abiding citizen. The issue here is crime control and I would like to see some positive action by vice-preside- nt ducted by the Division of Wildlife Resources indicate the rate of ingestion in three species is high and that even birds born in 1974 had eaten lead before the waterfowl season began last October.
