Show 0 Editorial Comment Speaker Named For Coming Support Campaign Finance Act With the spectre of Watergate still fresh on Utah voters minds, it seems timely that some action be taken to alleviate the problems of campaign with its inherent possibilities of abuses. Certainly the time is approaching (if not already here) when only the rich can afford to run for elective office. That fact coupled with the practice of special interest groups influencing legislators because of previous campaign fund contributions, dictate that something be done to reverse this trend. A step in the right direction has been made--wit- h the passage by the last Utah Legislature of a bill permitting Utah taxpayers to designate $1 of their state income tax to the political party of their choice. Such action has previously been inaugurated at the federal level. Now it is possible on the state level also. This fact must not be generally known or understood to Utahns, as evidenced by the fact that the Utah Tax Commission reports that on early returns only about 25 percent of taxpayers have designated the $1. The designation of $1 DOES NOT increase the individuals taxes. The new law further provides that of the $1 contributed by the taxpayer, half of it goes to the partys state organization and the other half goes to the partys county organization of the county in which the taxpayer resides. This method of financing elections is vastly superior to the method now used. Not only is it expensive for candidates, but we know of county political officials who have been forced to dig into their own pockets to finance county politics. If every taxpayer would so designate the $1 the entire tab for political activities could be financed without relying on other questionable procedures. Both the Republican and the Democratic parties in Utah have endorsed the act. In Sanpete County the Republican and Democratic county chairmen have also given their endorsement. Spokesmen for the American and Libertarian Parties have not as yet spoken out, but taxpayers may desifnate those parties so it's a good bet that as recipients of the $1 if they so des-rthose parties also favor the act. To contribute, without adding to your tax, just check the box on the state income 'ax form. A few yeais ago, an atheist complained about prayer and Bible reading in the government schools. She claimed that her son was being influenced against her wishes. It should have been focused on the compulsory taxation that suppoits government schools. So. too, should the uproar in West Virginia and elsewhere. Alerted by the widespread coverage given to the controversy in West Virginia, parents ate taking a closer look at what is being given to theii children. Such a development is long oveidue. What raised the hackles of the West Virginians was the discovery that their childien's schoolbooks contained selections written by drug addicts, Communists, perverts, lacists. and revolutionaries. Various texts were actually laced with obscenities and blasphemies; hatred of white people; inducements to experiment with narcotics; downgrading of patriotism and religion, and glorification of immorality. Spokesmen for the nationally known textbook firms pointed out that their textbooks were written to comply with educational standards which had been suggested by fedeial agencies and then adopted by state boards of education.
