They considered 26 pieces of legislation with topics ranging from farmland to habitual criminals. One of the bills which passed the House provided for a public information officer for the Utah Legislature. Speaker Ronald L. Rencher explained, We feel that individual citizens should have access to information about specific bills which concern them in addition to the bills which are reported in the mass media because of their general interest. A legislative information officer can provide this service to the public. This session we have a public information officer and he is working hard to keep up on bills, committee meetings, and voting. This service has been greatly aided by a telephone which allows anyone in Utah to call him without charge .... minimum? Not at for information, said Speaker Rencher. The number is (800) 662-535- 0. Another bill which is on its way to the Senate for consideration involves farmland assessment. The bills basic intent is to promote the use of land for agriculture in Utah. We are concerned about tax exemptions for those who purchase land for speculation, but wish to protect the farmers of our state, said Speaker Rencher. Habitual criminals were the subject of a bill sponsored by T. Quentin Cannon (R-Sa- lt Lake). The bill would allow the court to determine if a person is a habitual criminal after two and sentences, convictions, terms in prison for serious crimes. We can now, on the 1974 Utah Tax Forms, check a box designating that $1.00 of our state income tax will go to the political party of our choice: American, Democratic, Libertarian or Republican. Of course, as you know, you can also indicate on your federal form that you want to make a similar contribution to the campaigns of those seeking federal offices. If you check the box on the Utah form, indicating your party preference, half of the dollar you contribute will go to the state organization and half to the county organization. By making these contributions, more of us will participate in state and local government and thus reduce the influence of big contributors on party politics. We can make contributions at no cost to ourselves as taxpayers. Our $1.00 contribution will simply go to the party of our choice. In fact, some of it will stay at home, in our own county, to help finance local campaigns. We wish to thank our local newspapers for printing this announcement as a public service, and we hope that, as good citizens, you will give this effort your support. Sincerely yours, Dr. Wendell H. One of the bills which will be considered by the House in the fourth week involves a Utah It is Housing Finance Agency. an exciting concept which will help families build low and middle income families, said Speaker Rencher. The basic idea is for the agency to sell low - interest bonds and use the revenues for housing loans. The incentive to buy the bonds is that the income would be exempt from taxation. This allows lower interest rates on the housing loans, explained Speaker Rencher. If this agency is approved it could bring on a surge of new building in Utah. It would allow families to build homes who are presently out of the market because of high interest rates. All of this would not drain state funds, he said. y, somewhat acquainted with this area will stand a chance to win Does that mean that you must have lived here for 39 years National Auditions by Bruce Three Snow College Theater graduates will participate in the University Repertory Theater Association national auditions Feb. 9 at Long Beach State University in Long Beach, California.
