Show MANTI MESSENGER EPHRAIM November 1974 21, Thursday, ENTERPRISE 3 TALKING TURKEY with Dr. Alton Hansen are Dorine Scovfll and Melinda Russell. Snows Natural Science Division Boasts Unusual Specimens By Bruce Jennings The Snow College campus contains a variety of life: the Low Cost Housing is Rejuvenated Throughout Sanpete County many older houses are receiving new leases on life through repairs such as: new plumbing fixtures and repairs, new doors, roofs reshingled, electrical repairs and many similar projects. In many cases the labor for these projects is being donated by local church and civic groups, or by relatives of the recipients. The money for the repairs is being provided by a state housing grant which counties and cities applied for earlier this year. The money, which was appropriated by the 1973 legislature, is apportioned to each county and city according to their populations. Ephraim received $6,024, for instance, while Sterling received $408. The program was designed to rehabilitate housing owned by lower income families. Many of the elderly qualify because Social Security checks are relatively low. To qualify for a grant, a family's income should range from less than $3,000 for a household of one, to less than $6,000 for a household of five. cities Many and towns throughout Sanpete County are enthusiastically implementing the program. Mayfield has completely finished the program. Those areas which have not yet started are Ephraim, Sterling, Centerfield and Gunnison. According to Orlo McEwen, of the Housing Development Division, Utah Department of Community Affairs, many of the repairs are eliminating health or safety hazards. 5 Do yoo know students in the dorms, the plants in the herbarium, the birds and mammals in the natural his- tory collection. Dr. Hansen was able to obtain specimens of these because he has both federal and state collecting permits. The Bald Eagle and the Sandhill Crane are both now on the endangered species list, he says, but I think the protection they get is enabling them to make a comeback. Last week I saw flocks of Sandhill Cranes one of them containing about 75 individuals migrating south. They had spent the summer nesting and rearing their young somewhere in our area. "Surely our world would be diminished if they and the eagles disappeared forever only to be remembered in books. In addition to the birds, the collection also contains specimens of the mammals native to the area but rarely seen: the ring-tailcat, the bob cat, the beaver, the badger, yes, even the coyote. And on a classroom wall hangs a huge elk head with a great spread of antlers. It was taken on Manti 33 During Sale Battery Family Tool Kit This handy household of jobs! Dr. Afton Hansen, chairman of the colleges Division of Natural Science, took the toms on Boulder Mountain in the second spring of Utahs wild turkey hunt. They look as real as life now, in the Science Building display cases. There are 120 others, too, 65 species, in representing those cases, all mounted by Dr. Hansen. Theyre nearly all native to the central and southern Utah area, but how many human inhabitants of the area recognize their neighbors: the avocets, the stilts, the curlews, the willets, the ibises, the snipes, and the yellowlegs? "We look, but we often fail to see, Dr. Hansen says. "There is all about us an immense variety of life that contributes to our sense of wonder and the enrichment of our dally experience. That variety is illustrated by the presence of 18 varieties of ducks in the collection. Some of them are common enough, common as the mallard; others City Applications will be accepted until noon on Dec. 4 , 1 974 at the Ephraim City Hall Mountain. Before beginning the collection, Dr. Hansen taught himself the rudiments of taxidermy. "I began the collection partly as a hobby and partly as a way of augmenting classroom inhe instruction, explains. "What better way is there to study the characteristics of birds and mammals? And then we discovered, as the collection grew, that it makes other contributions. For one thing. It creates atmosphere. This is the building in which we study the nature and abundance of life, it says. For another. It feeds the sense of curiosity and wonder that all of us possess. It sends students out to explore and discover. "And finally, it brings people on campus to see and share with us. We welcome everyone. A good many groups Scouts and school children especially visit the displays. I like to believe that they go away with a new appreciation of the immense variety of life and the wonder of it all. I also like to think that they will be able to look with a broader vision at the natural world about them and the other creatures we share Earth with. iDawittfUaiclf Portable Mixer Lightweight mixer has convenient During Sale beater-ej- Swirl -- free Orbital Sander Double Insulated for electrical safety.
