Wildcat Grid Outlook By Steve W ilson Tribune Sports Water With the paOGDEN tience and studious intensity of a detective looking into a puzzling mystery, Dick Gw inn examines his 1973 Weber State football team. - Model 67. lightsmooth oction. for "3" mag weight Chambered shells. But most of all he is seeking an answer to the question, just what kind of team w ill Weber have in 73? Question Mark This Wildcat squad is pretty-mucof an unknown entity at this stage. Weber returns only nine starters, less than a full team, and there were some glaring faults when Gw inn and tus assistants started recruit- ing last spring. Yet, the rew head coach at this Big Sky school is firmly committed to the opinion that of faith, hope and chanty, faith and hope are the greatest. Enough said. My biggest concerns in the spring were: 1) the overall offense; 2) the defensive line, and, 3) the ability of freshmen to step in and provide us with 88 4895 BULK POWDER Sava by the pound. 2 period Dunng the from the opening of camp to the first exhibition game the y Stars will hold practice sessions with only four .scrimmages open to the general public. Sept. 15 at 10 a.m.; on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.; and on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. The first preseason game will be played in San Antonio. Then the Stars will play Indiana as part of a doubleheader in Louisville's Freedom Hall On the same tnp the will go to Lafayette, Weber State Builds on Hope Springfield 13"-14"1- 49 0(W depth. Although were still a little shallow as far as depth goes, I believe we have improved in these areas, Sark resuccessor Arslanian's marked. One reason for Gwmn's cautious optimism is Jim Larson, a gifted running back with a good noggin on his shoulders. Larson displayed his galloping quickness many times a year ago and should be ready for stardom in this his senior year. He will be joined in the starting backfield by fullback Brian Gladwell with Charlie Grant and Don Dowling acting as top reserves. The quarterback situation is a bit gloomy, as first stringer Church has never Blaine played a minute of college at that position. football Church, however, is a competitor as his fiery red hair suggests and he could make e offense Webers new tick with his drop back passpro-styl- ing. Split end Rob Conrad, by Gwinn as perhaps the finest receiver in the region, is a scintillating performer whose success, in good part, depends on Church's ability to get the ball to him Adequate Line Gone are the hulking giants of yesteryear but the offensive line promises to be adequate, in Gwmns own estimation. Those who will line up on either side of center Doug Smith (6-199) are Phil Howell (6-220), Kim Peterson , 231), Luther Parker (8-234), Les Smith (6-232) and Dave Wheeler (6-- 237). (6-2- The defensive line, which Gwinn noted specifically as a weak point, appears to be solid with experienced players like Ken Johnson, Mike LeP-reand Dave Edwards manning the tackle and uefensive end spots. The worry here is that the defenders might not be mobile enough to stay w ith the competition. At the linebackers, Weber is in a happy position with veterans John Orr, Dan Kriedler, Dave Lofgreen, George Hess and Randy Lloyd all battling to be starters. These fellows arent big but like the Wildcats they impersonate, they scratch and claw. y Now we arrive at the defensive secondary, which is probably the only segment of the Weber attack' that is blessed with depth. Defensive back-fielcoach Doug Mathews, who played collegiately at Vanderbilt, talked about it. d 5" PLUS FET & CASING EXCHANGE FOLLOWING TIRES ww BELTED 25.53 C78xl4 23.63 E7Sxl4 4 SEASONS SEIBERLING McLachern, Dave Gray and Ralph Parish, will see plenty of action in the secondary, the youthful assistant said. Its evident that we have more experience and depth here than any other area of this team. Mathev.s, with supervision from Gwinn, has installed a zone defense in the secondary and he expressed full e corfi-denc- in it. Our purpose is to prevent the long pass while permitting the short pass every now and then, he said. Besides, the zone doesnt require as much quickness because each player is responsible for a specific-areand only must react within that area. that It will be recalled Webers pass secondary was porous beyond belief last year and the Wildcats were embarBoise rassed when State went to work on them. As everyone probably knows by now, Weber State opens the season at home against Utah State. Both clubs are mysterious in that no one knows what to expect from pass-happ- y them.
