Braddock won the decision and the world championship which has to be the biggest longshot to win the heavyweight crown. George Foreman, who demolished Joe Frazier to win the heavy- weight championship in a major upset, did not qualify for "Cinderel- la ranking since he was not that M,. . George Foreman much an underdog to the champion. But Foreman might be as much as a 10-- 1 favorite to defeat Jose (King) Roman in their heavyweight scrap from Japan Aug. 31 in a bout to be seen on theater TV at the Salt Palace. - Thus far, 1973 has not been a good year for the favorites in heavyweight boxing, and Roman, the heavyd weight champion of Puerto Rico and the heavyweight in the world, can only hope the jinx holds on the favorites through Aug. 31. It will be difficult to imagine Foreman losing in his first title defense. Yet, it was almost as unthinking for Joe Frazier to lose to Foreman, in a bout where a comparatively untested heavyweight was meeting one of the more durable champions of modem times. When the golfers move onto the new nine, what they see is what they get and they will be seeing and getting a lot. - Beginning with the Foreman upset of Frazier in January, 1973 has seen a heavyweight upset on the average of once a month. Denvers Ron Lyle, then unbeaten, was upset by Jerry Quarry in February, and A1 (Blue) Lewis, former No. 7 heavyweight, was upset by Jack (the Giant) OHal-lora- n in March. On March 31, Ken Norton upset Muhhamad Ali and broken the formei champions jaw. In May, Jose Garcia, the only man to score a knock out over Norton, lost to Joe Alexander in Puero Rico in an upset. In June former WBA champion Jimmy Ellis was stopped with a single punch by Eamie Shavers and Ernie Terrell, a former WBA champion, was decisioned by Chuck Wepner. Also in June Mac Foster dropped a split decision to Bob Stallings. kayo over Garcia in DenLyle scored a three-roun- d ver the other night. Lyle was ranked No. 6 and Garcia 13th before the bout. Roman is ranked No. 10 for his fight with Foreman, the champion, in the fight. Ali ranks No. 2 and Norton No. 1 (behind Foreman) for their Sep'ember bout, which also will he be shown at the Salt Palace. There is no premium on power and putting. Good golf will bring good scores and par will be a good score while poor shots will hurt, Braun said Friday. "Another good feature is the fact that all trouble spots can be seen from the tee so there will be no sudden surprises think this new nine gives us a course that is the equal of any m the region. 1 am just very excited about Braun it. added 1 The sixth par-hole is worth special mention Braun said it resembles the famous No. 12 at Augusta, Ga , and said it is already being called, Little Augusta Tucson Ob r h bi Hdmannss 5 Garner jfc Ford cf McKrtnydh Trillo ?b Frnodi lb Ihnstne II Chon) rl Hoslev c Scrberry d Kroustt 0 3 4 110 3 2 2 ? 100 114 0004 3 3 0000 3 The green there is long and narrow and curving.
