The active search (UPI) for a small boy believed lost somewhere New in Mexico was ended Sunday. The boys voice had been heard pleading for help over citizens band radios for five days but police said the calls may have been a hoax. State Police Chief Martin Vigil said the decision was made to cancel the search because air and ground searchers had not come up with any real definite information to establish that the situation is valid. We have not come up with any information that is definite enough to say that there actually is someone out there and where this person might be, he said. :roof Improbable Vigil said there was no way to prove the calls for help were a hoax unless authorities found a person responsible. The boys calls for help were first reported last Tuesday by a California citizens band operator, and since then operators across the nation and even in Canada reported picking up the distress calls The signals said the boys name was Larry and that he and his father had been in an accident. The boy said his father was dead or injured in their pickup truck. He said he didnt know where he was. Vigil said attempts to locate voice would continue through four directional findin central New ing stations Mexico. the The police chief said he was not even certain that the voice came from New Mexico. Traced to Arizona The last transmission that searchers thought was from the boy broadcasting distress calls was traced to a young boy operating a walkie-talki- e Sunday in Phoenix, Ariz.
