May 26, 1973 4 Nixon Friend Has Most of San Clemente Estate, White House Says Continued From Page One acre in San Clemente for $1,249 000. That amount is equal to 77 per cent of w hat the entire parcel and imprm emenls ost the Nixons However, the portion the Nixons retained includes the familys Spanish mansion. Abplanalp's portion has no buildings. The ILhite House also said that bplanalp loaned the Nixons $025,000 to make down payments on the prooerty. The total down payment on two separate iransactions totaled $420 000 The status of the property since Nixon announced plans to acquire it in May, 19, has been described only in vague documents. The White House had refused to talk about it until the last two weeks The statement Friday came after the Santa Ana, Calif., Register reported May 6 that some Senate investigators believed the mortgage had ben paid off with leftover 1908 campaign funds. The White House vehemently denied that story and said later that $030 000 was still owed on the mortgage on the property. No such figure Friday's statement. appeared in Release of the statement issued Friday had been delayed several times during the past 10 days White House spokesmen said the delay was due to the complexity of the matter. The land transaction was completed on Dec. 15, 1970, the White House statement said. The White House did not explain why the arrangement was left undisclosed A spokesman said only that the statement was issued m response to the news story. The statement again termed that story totally unfounded. The statement did reiterate what had been said in May 1909: The Nixons wanted only 5 9 acres of the property, but were acquiring the larger parcel in order to assure themselves of a compatible neighborhood. Ostensibly because of the desire to sell part of the land, the property was put into a trust administered by Title Insurance and Trust Co. of Los Angeles, whose name appears in public records as the owner of record. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times said the White House account contradicted a statement made to The Times in October by John D. Ehrlichman. then Nixons domestic affairs adviser. Ehrheh-matold the newspaper then that as far as he knew the President was the sole trustee and the property could be listed as an asset of the President, the Times said At no time in the interview did Ehrlichman indicate the property had n been sold to anyone, the Times said. Here is a recent history of the property based on White House statements of 19tj9 and Friday, including what the White House says occurred 2'a years ago: In acres July J9t)9 Nixon purchased 23 California oceanfront million from hens of an 1 of Southern property for SI 4 California family. If additional cracking surfaces form in the direction of hotter rock, as we think they will, then well have a system that's going to perpetuate' itself for hundreds of years The some two million gallons of water needed initially to fill the system probably would be produced in the drilling operation.
