In the first place The Basin has the highest mountains in Utah and also has ast forest areas, some being in the High Uinta Primitive Area, but with lakes where high mountain fishing is great and where hiking and mountain climbing are popular. Hunting, or course, comes in for plenty of play in the autumn, and theres many a deer packed off to the freezers of local nimrods. Much of this type of activity lies to the north of the three towns, but southward also takes the isitor into equally fascinating areas. This has been Indian and outlaw country and you can drie your car or hike around the places visited by Ute Indians Wild and Butch Cassidys Bunch. There are petroglyphs in abundance, but youll have to inquire of local residents where to go. An interesting trip is south from Myton to Nine-Mil- e Canyon which used to be the main road from the east. The Army had a post there, and there once was a stage-coacstopover. The canyon also has some Indian ruins and, of course, some petroglyphs. Down around Ouray, an Indian town mainly, is the area once the province of the early mountain men, and there is an old cabin there, reputed to have been built by the legendary Kit Carson. habitat and their bones are still being unearthed. The place to see is the Dinor-sau- r National Monument, some 20 miles east of Vernal.
