Z4i 1 :" lk yr - ' -- 1 burned down or he had burned it asI am sure he did after the burial was made Or at least they never used that room again to live in That was a custom of theirs After the fire they made no attempt to rebuild and moved or were driven away The burial was in the nor- th west corner of the room near a door and a wall post The knees were drawn up close to the chest and the arms were held at the sides The body was lying on the right side with face up to the sky The head was to southwest and feet to the east There were no sandals or any remains of cloth of any kind or leather The skull was long and narrow with full forehead and very full back Cheeks were not very high part and bridge of the nose was narrow It was very badly decayed and soon fell apart The teeth looked like two rows of pearls they were so All were in white and perfect place Near the knees we found a fine pottery canteen or water carrier that will hold more than six quarts This was badly broken but we got all the pieces Near the right shoulder was a cooking jug of fine gray clay corrugated ware The handle was made of three strips of clay braided and then placed on the jug: then the whole thing was baked It is a very fine job of braiding and workman-plac- e ship in every way The jug or jar will hold three quarts Rarest Find The rarest find was held in the right hand when Old Man Injun was buried It was a rare necklace of 24 fine stones and bone beads with an agate pendant and held in the hand instead of worn around the neck The house was the semipit type with rock and adobe walla up three feet then post and wattle work On top of that I want to dig out the other rooms connecting that one for I am sure I can make some real 'finds in relics and information Within the last month I have visited nearly 150 village sites in this of the county They are of one part Et room to over 100 rooms in size It is strange enough now yet just consider that there are hundreds of like villages in this county in eastern Nevada the Arizona strip to the- Colorado river and at every water hole You can soon realize that at one time thousands of Basket Makers Then along came the lived here Pueblo Indian and built on the same hills and sites living there a long time On every creek and at every spring you find Indian signs or remains of All along the Virgin river houses there are village sites where they lived during the winter then went north to fish and hunt I 'disinfected all finds and cleaned them and then I examined them I checked all notes and it well Is a great find when you consider the great number of:years back that the old man lived there d serI have found the pent pictured on the rocks and other They are to puzzling pictographs be found every place These are the Indians' signs and if we could read them all what a book we could give to the world dig The mound is on a point on the Virgin river and is nearly 100 feet above the present water level But when Mr Old Man Injun lived on that the water level was only a few pointbelow his house feet The mound had many arrow chips and potsherds (pottery fragments) scattered on top We found the Basket Maker potsherds and I told a friend searching with roe that we would find the old Injun this time clearing out the old Aftcarefully hole we enlarged it by digging to the north We dug down and found we were in the center of a room as there was a fireplace three feet in diameter and one foot deep built of rocks with a rock floor The wall or side rocks were tilted back at top We found corncobs and char- coal and split deer bones in the fireand around it We found many Pueblo potsherds but no whole pottery in that room We-- discovered that the place had burned down for we found the chained posts poles and water willows that had been the walls of the house The lower part of the walls consisted of slab rocks standing on ends The Pueblo Indian had built his house on a clay bottom but did not know that he could find older house There remains or a burial below was muCh broken pottery and broken flint three broken machetes and two broken manos Everything was of Pueblo type even the walls and We did not find anything fireplace that was not broken up My friend wanted to try another place but I told him we were going to find that old man now or never I dug a small hole in the room floor and found river mud 12 inches thick six inches of river sand then six inches of river mud Then I found I turned the shovel over charcoal to my friend and told him to clean the charcoal loikuetntthteohNoNloertko i 1 S -
