Dignifying Distrust And Cultivating Suspicions ' It now teems that subversive associations long engaged in -- throwing monkey wrenches Into the machinery of national defense disbanded without consulting certain United States senators some of whom are quoted as demanding: 1 The right to continue carping at the constitutional heads of the government 2 The right to question the com mands of the military leaders of the army and navy 3 The right to inoculate enlisted men with doubt and thus cultivate a mutinous spirit 4 The right of politicians to assert superior capacity or sagacity in wartime emergencies 5 The right to openly discuss obvious errors or miscalculations to the natural gratification of foreign foes 6 The right to make controversial Issues of matters upon which fifth columnists may elaborate to foment discord After a treacherous enemy hazarded a surprise attack on our island possessions evidently believing that the eloquence of obstructionists heard in congress in various auditoria and over the airs had also converted some military leaders' to a belief in isolation after hundreds of uniformed Americans had been slaughtered as an apparent logical result of such conversion after the axis immediately solidified its opposition to what totalitarian leaders have always ridiculed as American lack of unity and loyalty to leadership it was thought that the obstruction game was ended or at least suspended According to the record of recent developments and utterances in congress an enemy that knows no mercy and brooks no discord will probably renew its reliance on a glaring weakness of democratic peoples who would prefer risking las of their liberties forever rather than hold them ia temporary abeyance during a crisis When the mysterious clique still bent on creating confusion and destroying discipline started a whispering campaign against Secretary Cordell Hull intimating that he had arranged with Secretary Knox to suspend naval patrols in the Hawaiian archipelago while peace negotiations were in progress both officials branded the story as of enemy origin "without a single shred of truth on which to base any part of such a rumor" '"No rational person would conceive anything of that kind or lend credulity to It" said Secretary Hull And yet there are now and always have been persons willing to credit and disseminate anything derogatory to fellow men under heavy responsibilities It certainly did not deter Senator Robert H Taft from insinuating in an address delivered in Chicago 12 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor that Secretary Hull told Secretary Knox that the withdrawal of marines from China and the release of tension In Hawaii were contemplated The senator seems reluctant to relinquish the role which always elicited much applause from Berlin At the same time the Chicago Tribune activities it has deprecated precautionary "witch-hunting" repeatedly referred to as : news is indisputable although it said "The that a fifth column is functioning in the Philippines and that the Japanese had plenty of spies planted in Hawaii There probably are fifth columnists and spies in this country" Fifth columnists betrayed Hawaii and the Philippines just as they are prepared to betray the continent of the United States They have been Hitler's chief reliance in every Invasion attempted save in Russia where traitors were exposed and incapacitated before they could do But wherever the fuehrer's bidding there has been a Henlein or a Quisling or a Laval loudly asserting the rights of a minority to criticise leaders of their renations in a crisis and to interspective ' for pose congressional investigations all been has result military procedure the that Hitler desired The sooner these senators awaken to - a realilation of the fact that the people of this republic artf engaged in a war and not in a political campaign the quicker fifth columnists will come to a conclusion that the jig is up headquarters in the Season building to residents of Utah A drive is being made to secure the sum of $12000 for maintenance of the office force the purchase of stamps and stationery and the investigation of suspected cases of the dreaded malady Time was when everyone considered the "white plague" incurable but research and experimentation convinced the medical profession that with proper care and cooperation of the patient most victims recover when treatment begins in the earlier stages of the affliction One purpose of a national tuberculosis association is to educate the public so that the trouble may be avoided altogether or combatted in its incipience The success that has crowned the efforts of this movement during the past half century compared with the hopelessness of former years is almost incredible Within the memory of persons now living especially of those who were brought up in the great Mississippi basin or along its tributary water courses tu berculosis called "consumption" by afflicted families was the chief cause of death It has dropped to the seventh place with cancer and "heart disease" away In the lead The work has been carried forward with the aid of funds obtained from the sale Of Christmas seals They may not 'mean anything to the healthy purchaser but might easily save an equivalent of the outlay In taxes New York Highlights By Charles B Driscoll NEW YORK — Diary: Somehow 1 have found that I reach for an amusing book a book of adventure or even a solid book of philosophy more often than I did before No war books the trouble came upon us new phase are this outmoded all by They A little book so far as I can discern that has amused me for- several lunch periods Is "Iff the Law" by Dick Hyman e illustrated by Otto Soglow It's a pocket-sizbook In which Is collected some of the foolishness that has been put upon statute books In our country Many of the laws cited are really not foolish at all but are presented with a point or two strained so that For instance the book they look silly says with a funny cartoon by Soglow that in Ohio it is unlawful to ride a jackass The at more than six miles an hour law probably doesn't specify a jack 1 should imagine it includes the female ass also Six miles an hour is fast enough for one of these beasts and the law probably was placed on the books as a humane measure But the purpose is to make us smile and that's all to the good these days Cornelia Otis Skinner was addressing Christmas cards when X called upon her yesterday "Yes 1 think we should send them out" she said thinks Hitler has lost of his total available manpower' on the plains of Russia ' Total nasi casualties' (killed wounded and missing) he estimates at 2000-00- 0 The long battle line - required the fuehrer to keep an ' army of 4000000 to 5000000 up front continuously He has 'fed this force from his maximum manpower pool of 8000000 to 9000000 men (which Incidentally is spread thin all around Europe in the Balkans France and other occupied regions) These estimates picture Hitler on the verge of disaster but unfortunately they are not fully accepted by other sources Another authority just as official and usually just as accurate thinks most of the nazi casualties who were wounded will be available again The permanent nazi loss so far he estimates at only ESO000 to 600000 men Everyone agrees red losses are much heavier Estimates run between 2000000 and 4000000 0 men Certainly 600000 to reds have been taken prisoners (Nazi losses in prisoners have been relatively inconsequential) generals — not desk-sitteBoth are red-tahaters chosen on merit for their air experience General Emmons who is to be in charge has an army reputation for silent aggressiveness He never relied on which should be heard and answered by all Salt Lakers who believe is saving our' forest areas It is part of the plan to avoid the great annual waste cf evergreen trees around Christmas time and last' year worked so well that it is being repeated ' this season : Last holiday season the tag program cut the usual waste of trees down to an estimated 2000 compared to 25000 in former years The sale of trees each year in and around Salt Lake can be forecast fairly accurately' and the forest service authorizes the cutting down of the required number and issues tags to be attached to all evergreens taken under these rules The old custom of decorating an evergreen tree at Christmas time has become a real American tradition although it came to us originally from Europe and to many whose hearts are young despite silvering hair and to those whose youthful hearts are just becoming accustomed to this world there would be something lacking in the yuletide if" the gaily decorated tree were omitted So let's have the festive tree with all its lights and baubles while we can but let's not waste nature's bounty by cutting down unwanted evergreens nt JSalt iZakc WASHINGTON— To the many Americans who have been fearful that war involvement would mark the end of cherished democratic liberties President Roosevelt's coincident appointments of a board headed by Associate Justice Owen J Roberts to investigate the Hawaiian disaster and of Byron Price as press and radio censor should convey the maximum of initial reassurance The outstanding characteristic of the investigation board is that its stature and independence are such as to make it free to condemn even the president himself If it should find that his actions or failure to act contributed to the unreadiness of the Hawaiian garrison Excepting Brigadier General Joseph P McNamey an active officer of the army sir corps chosen because of his special knowledge of the technique of air defense all members of the board are completely free from bureaucratic control Justice Roberts is one member of the supreme court who never before has received an appointment from President Roosevelt More than that he is the highest ranking Republican in the government excepting Chief Justice Harlan F Stone who was appointed to his present position by President Roosevelt The background of Major General Frank R McCoy retired Is Just as definitely Republican As a young officer he served as aide de camp to General Leonard Wood durn war said later as ing the White Houae aide to President Theodore Roosevelt and aide to William H Taft
