ut - Postwar Possibihtles Call for Protective Plans I ' From two important gr9ups in this country come expressions of alarm over economic conditions in the postwar period Lawyers: meeting in Indianapolis heard a warning that "if nothing is done now we shall face at the end of the defense boom a depression incomparably more serious than that which commenced In 1929" The economic policy commission of the American Bankers' association also yokes a warning but sees a chance for avoiding a severe depression by immediate restraint in nondefense spending "While we all recognize the economic shock of shifting from war to peace" the bankers say "a severe depression should not be fatalistically accepted as inevitable i" The lawyers' meeting was told that plans should be made now "for sufficient new economic activities to absorb the men money and materials left idle by the chronic maladjustments and temporary readjustments" There is nothing new in these Warnings but the fact that nnore persons are focusing their attention on dangers of postdefense conditions in this country indicates that something may be done this time to avoid the troubles following the last World war Warnings are symptoms of alarm but the nation needs concrete and positive plans to avert or at least cushion economic shocks -
