Show 1 Stipilay 'BlornIng -- June 11194r ilt 1Zakt Vbe orw 's t 7 k '1lb P it LJ EC) LLTd - - I : Editor's note: In this Interesting article Edna Ashby who has spent tile last two years as a student and "bachelorgirr at Branch Agricultural college's cooperative girls' dormitory tells a little about how this novel institution operate and her experiences as one of its t'y f --‘ t V original 48 occupant 4 By Edna Ashby It was really a thrill to enter the girls' dormitory on the Branch Agricultural college "campus so new and different from any other dormitory I had ever heard of and to feel that I along with 47 other girls was to take pact in a new experiment My first glimpse inside revealed decorated a large room a fireA glance to beautifly above mirrior a it In with place table front of me was and two chairs To theright a piano and—but I dared look no further but made my way from this room to a door marked "Matron" I had been looking forward to this from the time my application which I had sent in a month before with $5 had been accepted but In spite of the thrill and excitement there was a shakiness about meeting the matron and so many new girls Mrs Dell Rollins matron and wife of one of the faculty membert made me feel right at home As she opened the door to my apartment' she said with a smile "here is your home for the next few months" I had stepped into a kitchen That would win the heart of any home-lovin- g girl This was the thing that set this dormitory apart from all others for each of the 12 apart- ments were built on this same plan -- ' - :' ' brought The kitchen became our pride and joy and often our sorrovrfor cooktng htlures'i and unbalanced diets were our specialties But after a good deal of experimenting exchanging Of ideas and borrowing acrose the ball we soon learned to make i meal fit 1:1 to eat Saturdays always found us with mop pails:dusters' and cleaning equipment getting Our apartment 'ready for it) a 'rn inspection We had agreed to keep expenses-dowby doing the cleaning of the public area which Included the bathroom and ball ini each wing the laundry and reception room ourselves Cer- Jain duties were assigned us each boards As time went on more girls arrived and by the time night came nearly all 411 were settled and gathered in the reception room to get acquainted I was no longer afraid of this adventure but well pleased ' rneel—Genevieve Whitlock tight sets the table while she waits for her mates JO return from their clatmtwAn owd416o chtmilvitcop tion room of thw dormitory where the girls gather for it bit of fun when studio's and "housework" are ! ' n - week In the next room i leading off from the kitChen was 6 desk that Invited me to come and study a studio coUch'ind a big arm chair From the windows I could see the 'college buildings and campus As I had examined the kitchen had caught a glimpse of a bed and dresser from the bedroom door and as I entered it now I opened one of my boxes which - had been brought in and took- sheets and quilts from it and began making the bed Then came the task of unpacking But it was soon done for with a light knock Mrs Rollins brought lit three girls and introduced them as my room mates andwe began work- : Di On Childs above gives her hair a few finishing touches before the vanity mirror in her bedroom It's nice to tome home to a prepared with the restilts my application had this ing together It wasn't long' until we had our clothes hanging in the closetst our dishes arranged in the cupboards our canned food relayed to the top shelves our fresh vegetables butter stored in the refrigerator the flour in the bin and we were ready for the fun of keeping house and entering wholeheartedly into this experiment Laughing arid talking we gall ered 'up the remains and made our way to the storeroom and garbage cans On the way we passed through the laundry room another feature of this experimental institution where two girls were trying' out the new washing machines another was pressing on one of the ironing Above a corner of one of- the apartments acquire st "book" education Wane Hansen 'lathe knorledge-seette- n - It was equipped with built-i- n euti boards sink electric stove refrigerator dining table and four chairs It looked so cosy and convenient that I could picture hot biscuits and cakes coming from the oven hear potatoes boiling on the stove and see the table 'set for four with odds and ends of dishes brought from our homes I had batehed before but never xth anything as nice as At fop the girls' dormitory of Branch Agricultural college Cedar City Utakwhere 48 coeds have learned to cook and keep house es well as to 1 i(7 L lit with tables set with food prepared by our own bands and surrounded by fourgtrielnatead of a1148—has not only given us a great 'deal of home-makipractical's' ng ' 1 experience but we have learned to cooperate and live together in one big family under new and modern Ideas - - l':i - Just a inTith after school began we scoured and scrubbed every nook and corner for the dedicatory services 141ong with the other 47 swept wilt scrubbed and waxed floors washed windows etc laugh ini and joking all the time When the doors Were flung open for open house thati morning of October 18 1939 we were so proud of our home that we itrutted about pike peacocks as we entertained our visitors Like other dormitories we have our own i5iganization and council which handles under the direction of the matron the affairs of the : ' dormitory !
