city” of gigantic size and weird appeal ance You would see a giant “medicine ball” higher than a three-stor- y besides a number of building enormous structures containing model airplanes which circle and soar in very much the same fashion as if they properly belonged in a deluxe toy department of an department store But this is no play place It is the research center maintained by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics Here in recent months many gpectacular additions have been made to the world’s finest airplane testing equipment The giant “medicine ball” is part of the new fiee-fligwind tunnel The safety of airplanes in flight is intimately associated with the stability and control characteristics they exhibit in responding to the maneuvers imposed by the pilot lor this reason problems of stability and control are among the most ( 20 IT1'tain Its s charm menus r of ‘The ed e tglish of operas ' Hillam rod uc t tor of the o scnmidt ultra-moder- Doroth Norman i Norma s indicate that this tunnel closely appioaches actual flight conditions An examination of the flow required in the building housing the tunnel led to the adoption of a steel sphere to make possible a unifoi m ri turn flow The steel sphere is 60 feet in diameter and can be supplied with air compressed up to two or more atmospheres in which the operators will work Here likewise a decompression chamber is provided so the operators ran return gradually to normal atmospheric pressure The tunnel itself mounted on a steel framework inside the sphere has a test section diameter of 12 feet and is about 30 feet long The drive consists of a power electric motor turning a 15's foot diameter piopcller The whole apparatus is mounted on bearings so that the tunnel can be tilted through 600-hor- respond with the angle of glide of the model M hen an airplane or model glides steadily in free air it travels along an inclined path descending slowly as it moves foiwaid tapidly By setting the tunml at the correct angle and blowing the wind uphill as rapidly as the model would glide downhill it is possible to make the model glide fietly and steadily in the test section of the tunnel and this is the pi ineiple of opei ation about which this novel wind tunnel is designed The models usid m the tuniul must be specially built to duplicate on a small scale not only the shape of the airplane but also the distribution of weight in the wings and fuselage The motions of the model and the airplane will then be the same both in lelative propoition and size Two opeiators are required to run the tunnel One of these contiols the angle of tilt and the air speed thus assuring that the model will neither rise nor descend nor move forward nor backward The second operator is the pilot who actually flies the model during the pel lod of its test flight in the wind tunnel Rid- full-size- jjl i t t Below the Giant “Medicine Ball” The Two Men One Standing on lop of the Sphere and the Other on the an obsei v ation window just beneath the test chamber the pilot flies the model by operating switches connected with a fine trailing wire to electromagnets in the model These opeiate the control surfaces M ith this tunnel it will be possible not only to give pilots a general "feel” of the flying and handling charactenstics of a new airplane before they ever take it up but it will also be possible to obtain accurate recoi ds of the motion of planes w ith various degrees of stability under the action of known amounts of conti ol application Through such reseaich the new free flight wind tunnel gives piom-ls- e of the development of new design standards for stability and control that will lesult in marked impiovemont in the safety of future auciaft Almost any red blooded youngster boy or girl to say nothing of the aeronautical engineer would be fascinated with wind tunnel Here the realistic looking models of all manner of airplanes are launched in a spin in the rising air stream and every maneuver of the spin is seen from the observer’s w indow After the spin has become fully developed a clockwork mechanism con- tained within the model automatically moves the controls foi
