Show X II THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE WEDNESDAY MORNING APRIL 7 1937 w- - WPAMusical Leader Asks Aid in Utah Rail Crossing Mishap Fatal JTo S L Man Visits City V Dr Sokoloff Listens to and Lauds Sinfonietta at Federation Meeting Five Cooperative sponsorship for a Salt Lake City symphony orchestra was sought at a luncheon given by the Utah Federation of Music clubs Tuesday by Dr Nikolai Sokoloff national director of W P A federal music projects Dr Sokoloff made his suggestion after listening to the state “Sinfonietta” play at the ballroom of the University of Utah union building under direction of Reginald Beales director of the orchestra which is the only W P A music project in the state Commenting on the orchestra he said: Praises Leader “Its music has Integrity I found the tonal quality splendid —musically Mr Beales himself is an excellent violinist and could play first violin in the major symphonies of the country I was greatly pleased "ShorWomings of the Sinfonietta are due td forces beyond the control of Mr' Beales or its members There are too few instruments and to get more' instrumentation' it will be necessary to go outside of the W P A program’ The director explained that according to W P A regulations this could be done by private support joining with the government in furHe estinishing more musicians mated that 25 more musicians would be enough to make the orchestra adequate to any occasion Suggests Plan at At the luncheon discussion which Mrs Edna Evans Johnson ar federation president served chairman and which was attended by state and regional leaders in the WPAai well as board members of the music federation Gail Martin told how the needed cooperative sponsorship might be obtained He reminded the group that the newly created Utah State Institute of Fine Arts had the power to support music as well as other art forms and it might be able to further Dr Sokoloffs proposal After the luncheon the national director said he had learned that in two cases the Utah music project had accomplished its purposes in rehabilitating musicians who were employed on manual labor projects Shows Pleasure “When I hear that a project has actually rescued some musician from the loss of his music I am genuinely glad” he said 'That is the real purpose of these projects When a man loses his ability to make fine music it Is a tragic thing not only for himself but for his country” Dr Sokoloff left Tuesday night for San Francisco but declared that he intended to visit Salt Lake City again during the summer- “There are things here that I want to see which time has not permitted on this trip” he said One person was killed when struck by a railroad train and five persona were injured in traffic mishaps Tuesday afternoon and evening police reported The dead man if Wayne M Crock- in 4 -
