Show Hilltop HILLTOP TIMES 9 TIMES July 31, 2014 Creative Canvas with Carrie Program Monthly Painting With A Twist program gets a new name BY DANA RIMINGTON Hilltop Times correspondent HILL AIR FORCE BASE — The Painting with a Twist program previously held quarterly at the Landing is being revamped and will now be known as Creative Canvas with Carrie to be held monthly at Hill Air Force Base to help people realize anyone can be an artist. The upcoming class on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., will be taught by 37-year-old Carri Schmidt, who has a degree in art with a focus in interior design. Schmidt has been devoting time to art for most of her life and hopes to share her joy with others. "I am hoping folks at the end of the night can take a piece of artwork home and realize it's not that hard," Schmidt said. "A lot of people think they can't paint or draw, and they are really surprised at the end, and feel a sense of achievement and pride. I hope this class pulls out a little bit of an artist in them." Janelle Brown, who oversees the programs held at The Landing, decided to it was time to take advantage of the military community and tie everyone together for the new program by utilizing the base's own resources, including Schmidt, who is a military spouse on base. "We want people to see how versatile we are and think outside of the box versus driving an hour away to Murray or Park City to get a similar program," Brown said. "We want to make sure we are looking at our own community and tapping into our own resources." Through her husband's eight deployments, Schmidt was able to turn to art as a stress reliever while taking care of their two kids, going to school, and working full-time. "I needed an outlet, and some way to relieve my stress and involve the kids, and art is a nice calming place for me to go," Schmidt said. Schmidt reaffirms that participants in the class do not need any art training or back- ground, as the class is open to every skill level. Schmidt plans to go through every step or brush stroke, and explain the techniques. The class will also help people think outside the box, including painting without a paintbrush. Schmidt knows art can get expensive if people want it to, but points out that people don't need fancy stuff to be creative. "I will be teaching different techniques using different mediums, even using a plain old butter knife in our first class," Schmidt said. "That's the thing — people think you have to use certain tools, but there are no rules in art at all." Schmidt also wants to make sure people learn how to be creative and use their imagination. "I don't want them looking at the next person's art, thinking theirs has to look just like that. I want them to have fun and have an original piece of artwork, using their imagination, and being creative," Schmidt said. The plan is to hold a Creative Canvas with Carrie class once a month with different themes. The Aug. 16 night is a ladies only night, but future classes will include parents with their children, holiday themes, or even a date night for couples. The cost is $30 per person. Tickets are on sale at the ROTT office in the Landing, or at the Outdoor Recreation Tickets and Travel office. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a social hour, including cocktails. Painting begins at 7 p.m. for the two-hour class. Supplies will be provided. ALL-STAR LINEUP Blue Angels dazzle at Thunder Over Utah Air Show Contributed to the Hilltop Times S T. GEORGE - An all-star lineup, headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, drew thousands of spectators to the 2014 Thunder Over Utah Air Show. Officials estimate approximately 32,000 people attended the show held at St. George Municipal Airport over three days during the weekend of July 25-27. "We are happy that the community came out to support the show this year even with the show taking place in the middle of the July heat," said Kevin Walsh, air show director. "Spectators, performers, community leaders, sponsors, media partners, and volunteers all came together to make the show a success." Despite temperatures pushing 110 degrees at the airport throughout the weekend, threat of thunderstorms each day, and high winds at times, the show went on as scheduled each day. The event also featured classic military aircraft, civilian performers, static aircraft displays and fun activities for kids and families. plan worked well this year and show operations were reported to run smoothly throughout the weekend. "Our hats are off to the airport, safety forces and city officials for the updates they made to the traffic patterns and their work on site throughout the weekend," Walsh said. "The traffic plan worked as expected getting people in and out. We were able to clear the parking lots on Saturday slightly more than 30 minutes from the time the Blue Angels stepped out of their planes and Sunday within twenty minutes." "We will do a full show debrief in the next few weeks and review what worked well and what we can improve," Walsh said. While the Blue Angels indicated their support for a show in St. George, a determination of a future show date is pending. Ticket sales from the show benefited several community organizations including the United Way Dixie, Young Eagles, Dixie JROTC, Rotary, Western Sky Warbirds Museum and the Yankee Air Museum. Upon reflection, 'Oculus' is really quite good By STEVE &atm Hilltop Times movie critic At first, I thought this was going to be a Hp-off of "Mirrors," but upon further reflection, I must admit this turned out to be a smart, complex tale of inescapable tension and terror that relies more on suspense than bloodlust. A refreshing change. As children, Kaylie and Tim experience a family tragedy no one should have to live through and it all revolves around an old ornate mirror their father had in his home office. Now, 11 years later, Tim (Brenton Thwaites) is being released from a mental hospital (000hhh) and his older sister Kaylie (Karen Gillan) is outside waiting for him (0000hhhh). It's not long before Kaylie tells Tim, "I've found it." He freezes in shocked recognition. *** THE FILM: Oculus' STARRING: Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Katee Sackhoff, Rory Cochrane, Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan. BEHIND THE SCENES: Cowritten and directed by Mike Flanagan (Absentia,"Ghosts of Hamilton Street); filmed in Mobile, Ala. PLAYING: 6 p.m. Runs time: 105 minutes. MPAA RATING: R for terror, violence, some disturbing images and brief language. It seems the dreaded mirror has had a troubled past.
