Hill Heroes volunteer, sew, make a difference BY SARAH STOLL Hilltop Times correspondant HILL AIR FORCE BASE Sewing machines hummed on July 18 in the Hill Air Force Base Airman and Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) as Hill Heroes volunteers worked together to create deployment dolls and pillowcases for the families of Airmen who are, or will be, deployed. The volunteers gather the third Friday of each month to cut, iron, sew, stuff, and create "stuffed mommies and daddies" and pillowcases for deserving families around Hill Air Force Base. Leader, Cindy Schmierer, and her co-leader, Tammy Allen, work diligently each month to meet their designated order from the A&FRC who collect orders during deployment briefings. One item per dependent may be ordered by Airmen and their photos are taken at A&FRC. The program is free to any service SARAH STOLL/Hilltop Times ABOVE: "I was told by a friend about when her 2 year old received hers, her daddy handed her the doll and her eyeballs got as big as baseballs and was amazed that her daddy was in her arms ... And was just in love with her doll. For me, to picture that scene happening makes me a little emotional," said Hill Heroes See HEROES I Page 5 co-leader, Tammy Allen. HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Twenty-seven positions are being cut at Hill Air Force Base as part of an Air Force cost-cutting initiative, but a quick look at some of the other bases impacted by the plan reveals things could have been a lot worse. The Air Force announced Monday that it will eliminate 3,459 positions over the next five years to save $1.6 billion under a Defense Department directive to cut its costs and staff by at least 20 percent. The plan calls for significant reductions at headquarters Air Force, major commands, numbered air forces and field operating agencies around the country and at overseas locations. Hill spokesman Rich Essary confirmed July 15 that 27 headquarterslevel positions would be cut at Hill under the plan. The Air Force has not specified how many of the positions being eliminated will be civilians, but will offer early retirement and voluntary separation incentive pay programs to encourage civilians to leave early. The Air Force says it will pursue voluntary civilian reductions before any involuntary measures. Hill's job losses under the plan pale in comparison to other Air Force installations across the country.
