SENIOR AIRMAN ALLEN STOKES/U.S. Air Force A little bite of heaven ... in a gourmet cupcake Lou GORNY Hilltop Times editor BY MARY I n the course of a little more than 45 minutes, one cold Thursday afternoon, loyal customers stopped in to purchase "Heavenly Cupcakes" from the HeidiCakes trailer on base parked near the BX. Nikki Malone was the first customer who stopped in. This was just after she was mobile after surgery on a torn meniscus, saying all she wanted was a cupcake from the HeidiCakes trailer. Malone, a member of the 388th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, was helped to the trailer window on crutches by her brother, Jesse, who also ordered a cupcake. She got curbside service from her husband who drove them both there. Janene Leftwich, started HeidiCakes and named it that after her daughter Heidi kept saying they ought to go into business together. However, the first "Heavenly Cupcakes" were sold when Leftwich started selling cupcakes at church to provide sister, Nikki, a 388th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron member who had just undergone surgery on her knee and said that once she was up all she wanted was a cupcake from HeidiCakes, so they stopped in for an order. Jesse Malone stands with his Carrissa West, military spouse, stops in for an order at HeidiCakes with her daughter. She reports she is a repeat customer. 2008 Spirit Pin 2009 Spirit Pin Sp49/7.49 MARY LOU GORNY Hilltop Times ¿010 4) 2010 Spirit Pin Sierra Lelevier, 388th Component Maintenance Squadron, stops by to make a cupcake run for some of her fellow Airmen. She bought gingerbread and eggnog cupcakes. funds for a nonprofit which put her husband in schools to talk to kids about the danger of drugs and alcohol. "My husband was raised by an alcoholic father and he wanted to bring awareness to addiction," said Leftwich. Once church members got a taste of her cupcakes, and requests started coming in, Leftwich began baking cupcakes in earnest, getting up at 4 in the morning to bake in the guest home behind her house in Hooper, now equipped with commercial ovens and mixers to get things started. On this particular Thursday, HeidiCakes cupcakes were selling for a lower price than usual, to boost seasonal sales. Gingerbread cupcakes and spiked eggnog cupcakes seemed to be the favorites but the flavors change, said Leftwich. She enjoys watching such shows as "Cupcake Wars" and uses her neighbors as guinea pigs for new flavors before selling them.
