Show TIM ES 11 Aug. 8, 201 7 Golden experiences for families at Western Campout BY BARBARA MCCONVILL Director, 75th Force Support Marketing A donkey, a pig and a dancing horse were just a few of the surprises that entertained more than 1,300 family members and friends at the fifth annual family campout at Hill Air Force Base Centennial Park. Kids of all ages enjoyed petting the farm animals, having their faces painted with super heroes and butterflies, riding on the strong back of Sundance the Dancing Horse, enjoying a fine dinner sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, and munching on popcorn during the outdoor movie. New this year was the Gold Rush activity as kids searched a sand pile for gold nuggets, and then redeemed them for "campout coins" that could be used for treats and prizes. "What an exciting and memorable time I had as a volunteer during the 75 Force Support Squadron campout," said Rebecca Delgado who was tasked with checking in the overnight campers. "As I sat in my chair with tired feet the next day I found comfort visualizing what a great fulfilling day I had. His contributions, along with volunteers and library staff, made for a successful Summer Reading Program. Summer Reading Program success with community support and student intern 75th Force Support Squadron Staff A mid the ubiquity of today's electronic media, books remain resilient and the demand for reading programs at the base library persists for all age groups. Programs such as Summer Reading, Story Hour, Literacy Exploration, Online Database Resources, Teen Discovery, Adult Groups and Computer Knowledge, remain popular but can only be offered with the help of volunteers. As an innovative approach to offer this year's Summer Reading Program, the base library recently joined a partnership with select colleges and universities to offer an environment for degree-seeking internstudents to earn practicum credits. This summer, Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas, offered Intern Jeffrey Slater, a Master of Librarian Science student, as the first field experience student to earn three credits toward his degree while partnering with the base library. The Air Force outlines each year's Summer Reading program and this year it was "Have Book — Will Travel" that ran June 6 through July 25. Hill Air Force Base had 192 children sign up, reading a total of 1,819 hours over the course of the program. As an intern, Slater had the responsibility to plan, execute, and evaluate the Summer Reading Program to include marketing and outreach. Planning included a travel path to the land of make believe, travel to the future, travel to another country/culture, and travel to space. Execution brought story time with puppets and dinosaur bones, fairy tale time, and costume dress, building rockets, learning through telescopes, and exploring how robots are created and function. The Summer Reading program ended with remarks from Col. Thad Hill, 75th Mission Support Group Commander, acknowledging the children's reading achievements. Prizes and goodies were provided to all participants. The Summer Reading program owes its success to the partnership of Hill Air Force Base, Student Intern Jeffrey Slater, Base Librarian Moira Tyrell and Volunteer Deedee Thaden, who all gave countless hours of support. |
