WHITNEY M. PARDO Hill AFB Public Health H MARY LOU GORNY/Hilltop Times The Hill Field Elementary School Girls on the Run Club "go nuts" for running, their sign says as they gather at the Girls on the Run celebratory 5K at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. The buddy run follows three months of twice weekly running activities preceded by brief lessons on physical, social and behavioral tools for pre-adolescent girls. Team based at Hill Field Elementary School part of crowded SLC run BY MARY Lou GORNY Hilltop Times editor W hen her pre-teen daughter wanted to learn more about running, Reece Benoit, a Hill Field Elementary School parent, decided to focus on a "Couch to 5K" program they could both use to help her daughter train. However, things soon changed when she heard from a friend in Denver, who asked her if she had heard of the program, Girls on the Run. A state run division of the nonprofit, GOTR, responded to Benoit in December to tell her that Davis County School District had been added to the program but that they needed volunteers to come forward to open local chapters. With her friend's daughter's enthusiastic endorsement of the program, and what she had learned about the program, she stepped forward. Benoit became Coach Reece and her daughter, Ava, gained twentythree new friends, and three more coaches. The nonprofit program, started by Molly Barker, in 1996 in Charlotte, N.C., has developed into an international organization with more than 200 councils and organizations in Canada as well. Twice-weekly meetings introduce the girls to topics such as choosing positive thoughts and using those in running, how to deal with See GOTR I page 11 Courtesy photo Kalli Patillo, Hill Field Elementary Team Member, participates in the Girls on the Run celebratory 5K in Sugarhouse Park on June 1. ave you ever thought about doing a fundraiser involving food but you didn't know where to start? Here are a few guidelines to follow to ensure your fundraiser doesn't turn out a recipe for disaster! All fundraisers, to include Temporary Food Booths (TFB), must be routed through the private organization coordinator, Monika Johns IAW AFI 34-223, Private Organization Program. She will provide your organization with a routing sheet specific to the type of fundraiser your organization is requesting. The Public Health office, located in Building 570, is your first stop in preparation for a fundraiser involving food. According to AFI 48-116, Food Safety Program, Public Health is required to maintain oversight and review and approve all TFBs prior to operations commencing. In order to ensure the on-base population is being sold the most wholesome, unadulterated products, Public Health requests all individuals who wish to operate a TFB, to report to its offices on a walk-in basis. During the visit, the committee point of contact will complete an application and upon its approval will receive a brief training on appropriate food handling techniques. Upon completion a certificate of accomplishment will be awarded. Even if you plan to hold a food fundraiser that is by donation only, the Public Health office is still available to provide training and food safety expertise. Please note that if food is considered donation only, that a document to that effect issued from Public Health must be visible at your fundraising location. For additional information regarding your private organization or how to become a private organization, please contact the Hill AFB Private Organization Coordinator, Monika Johns at DSN 775-6793. If you have any questions or concerns regarding food safety, please contact Staff Sgt. Whitney Pardo from the Public Health office at DSN 586-9549/9546. 7 |
