Show Hilltop HILLTOP TIMES ME S April 25, 2013 1 1 Review: Yippie-ki-no way! 'Die Hard' falters in sequel BY STEVE SALLES Standard-Examiner movie critic K. So the new "Die Hard" poster with "Yippie-ki-yay, Mother Russia" on it caught my attention. I thought to myself: Cool, they're going back to the more chatty, cerebral John McClane, who likes to verbally spar with his bad-guy opponents. Bring on another Hans Gruber! John will irritate the heck out of him, while outsmarting his evil intentions. No such luck. Sadly, our glib flatfoot from the Big Apple has gone the way of modern action cinema. Shoot first, shoot often, but whatever you do 4 don't shoot off your mouth. When did the filmmakers decide that booms and bangs were better than brilliant banter between foes? And who was better at it than them in a massive military assault vehicle and, believe it or not, John McClane in a commandeered army truck chasing both. He's been in the country for 20 minutes and he's already wreaking havoc 4 and not your normal, run-of-the-mill type 4 he's causing mega car crash sequences that by comparison make the efforts of James Bond, "M.I.'s" Ethan Hunt and Jason Bourne look like deskriding tax accountants breaking No. 2 pencils. That might sound thrilling to some, but that's not what makes "Die Hard" movies unique, and frankly, they've gotten progressively worse. Now, Bruce Willis says he's willing to do one more "Die Hard" before retiring the character. Hopefully, he'll get back to the snarky dialogue that once made these films interesting. Bruce Willis? Unfortunately, he's letting his brawn do the talking for him now, and that's a mistake. This time around (No. 5, if you're keeping track), John McClane (Willis) is traveling to Moscow because he's gotten word that his son Jack (Jai Courtney) is in trouble with the law and is about to go on trial for the murder of a highly placed Russian official. McClane barely arrives before a bomb goes off outside the court building, amazingly allowing Jack and a valuable Russian national, Komarov (Sebastian Koch), to escape. Lo and behold, there's good old John just standing in the street, yelling at Jack, arousing the suspicions of an army of bad guys nearby because we have to have a chase scene. Jack and Komarov flee in a panel truck, the bad guys right behind Job fair, governor's summit aids military families through variety of approaches BY MIKAYLA BEYER Hilltop Times staff T he Governor's Military and Family Summit hosted a variety of seminars geared toward helping service men and their families cope with the stresses of life in the armed forces and out, and one of the most timely was a workshop on financial management. With the economy still in a difficult place and the prospect of furloughs for civilian workers, knowing the right ways to stay within a budget can make or break a family. Justin Knutzen's "Figuring It Out 4 Financial Success in and out of the Military," strove to inform summit attendees about the future of debt in America and how to obtain the knowledge to manage it. "I didn't get a good start on how to manage my finances. I had to read a lot of books and learn that way," Knutzen said. He described the process of meeting his future wife and realizing how deeply in debt he had become as a result of careless spending and a lot of loans. He eventually learned, along with his wife, how to maintain a budget and reconcile their spending impulses with the benefits of having money saved up. "We started to learn the difference between needing and wanting, and we also learned another very important word: 'No," he said. Knutzen stressed the many benefits that exist for military and retirees, but also urged caution among people planning for their futures, since such retirement benefits are only granted to those who serve in the armed forces for 20 years or more. Casey Rivera, who attended the seminar and is in the process of transitioning from military to civilian life, found the financial seminar and many others helpful. "I've learned to talk to everyone, not just one group, and not to close any avenues. There are lots of different ways to make your life successful," Rivera said. Approximately 300 participants were in attendance for the educational programs including health and mental health professionals who work with the military and their families, said Tia Korologos, ESI Management Group. More than 160 employers conducted interviews during the job fair and 500 job seekers attended the event held in conjunction with the summit. The Governor's Summit takes place in Salt Lake City once each year. .0 FRANK MASI/SMPSP/Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp.
