Frederick Thaden, 75th Air Base Wing vice commander, at a ceremony at the Brigham City Tabernacle on Veterans Day. The colonel spoke at the event acknowledging the sacrifices of veterans and the contributions of the "Greatest Generation" during World War II. The event was attended by many veterans and featured a striking of the bell ceremony for each fallen Layton veteran since World War I. MIKAYLA BEYER Hilltop Times Powwow at Clearfield High School, Nov. 17 In conjunction with Native American/Alaska Native Heritage Month a powwow will be held Nov. 17, noon to 5 p.m., at Clearfield High School. The public is invited to attend. Turkey Trott 5K Run or Walk on Nov. 15 The Hill AFB Health and Wellness Center, Civilian Health Promotion Service and the Warrior Fitness Center have sponsored a "Turkey Trott" 5K Fun Run/Walk for the Great American Smokeout on the Smokeout day, Thursday, Nov. 15, noon to 1 p.m. Registration will be at the Warrior Fitness Center. The first 100 to sign up will receive a beanie, and there will be a prize for the first place male and female winners. Layton held a Veterans Day ceremony at Central Davis High School, which began with a welcome from Layton council member Joyce Brown, a presentation of the colors by Northridge High School's ROTC, and the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" by Scott Sweeten. Later on, Layton's mayor, Steve Curtis, gave his own tribute to the Layton citizens who have entered the armed forces. "I am very privileged to preside over an assembly of heroes," Mayor Curtis told the attending veterans.
