Show HILLTOP TIMES rIolvyP 3 Combined Federal Campaign 51 years and still going strong BY TIM RANDOLPH Hill CFC Vice Chairman G reetings Team Hill! As this year's Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) vice chairman for Team Hill, it is my great pleasure to tell you about this year's campaign. The mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. Established in 1961 by an executive order from President Kennedy, CFC is the world's largest work place charitable contribution program, providing an opportunity to give for all federal employees and military personnel. With more than 4,000 charities to choose from, federal employees can easily donate to the charities The Intermountain CFC region's Executive Director Bruce Jacobs adopted the theme. Johnson stated, "We're confident that if we reach our donor goal, we'll meet the dollar goals set in the past." On-line pledges make giving incredibly easy. Just go to www.intermountaincfc.org and log in. Click on the Nexus icon and you are on your way. This year, many of the campaign posters include a Quick Response, or QR code to enable pledging from your mobile device. And as always, your Unit Keyworker can provide a or causes of their choice. This year, there are over 250 dedicated volunteers working hard to ensure the campaign is a success. There have been a number of events to date including a book sale, a 5K Fun Run, and the annual kickoff event at the Hill Museum. All of these events were planned and executed by Team Hill volunteers, selflessly offering their time, skills and talents to make these events a resounding success. The cornerstone of the campaign is the unit project officers and key workers. They are the folks responsible for making contact with employees, providing charity catalogs and pledge forms, and information about CFC. But the real stars of the campaign are the donors. This year, Scott Johnson, Team Hill chairman, chose to focus the campaign on "Donors, not Dollars," with a goal for 4,150 donors. Pro-Am MMA fight coming to Layton The Cobra Council 0 ne of the biggest Mixed Martial Arts fights to come to Davis County will take place later this month, according to the Cobra Council, a private, nonprofit organization that benefits military members, civilians and families at Hill Air Force Base. Popular Pro-Am contenders Thiago Alves and Gabe Francis will go headto-head at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Davis Conference Center in Layton. Doors open at 6 p.m. The event, which is dubbed "One Strike, One Kill," is named after the Cobra Council. Event proceeds will be donated to the council. L.T. Weese, the event's organizer and a 388th Component Maintenance Squadron honorary commander, said local fans of the MMA sport often have to drive to Salt Lake or Utah County for Pro-Am MMA bouts. Accordingly, some of the community's officials are welcoming the event being hosted in Davis County in support of Hill AFB. "This is the best of both worlds. An exciting, professional MMA fight right here in Davis County and a really great way to support the Airmen at Hill," Utah State Rep. Curtis Oda said. "It brings the community and military together for a night of fun." Layton Mayor Steve Curtis couldn't agree more. "An event like 'One Strike, One Kill' not only brings the community out for a fun night, but gives our Airmen a much-needed break and show of appreciation," Curtis said. "I am truly excited to see an event of this caliber come to the Davis Conference Center to show Hill Air Force Base the appreciation they deserve." Hill AFB, which is the largest single site employer in the state of Utah and employs more than 21,000 military members and civilians, receives frequent support from the community and base officials are well aware of that support. "The MMA night is another fine example of exceptional community support to Team Hill's Airmen and their families," said Col. Scott Long, 388th Fighter Wing commander. "Civic leaders like L.T. Weese continue to demonstrate their undying commitment to our mission and the Airmen who make it happen. He is a true champion for our military. The MMA night should be another great event." Weese, an active member of the community who regularly helps promote events for the base populace, is quick to give credit to others. "It's a team effort and a lot of people have to work together to make these events successful," Weese said. "It's a ton of work, but we do it so the Airmen can have the programs they need. It's the least we can do, especially when you look at all (Airmen) do for our country." "When I'm asked why I spend so much time and money on these events when I could just hand over a check, I tell them one person can never show the military how much they are loved; only a community can express that we recognize the sacrifices they make for us on a daily basis," Weese said. "My goal is to give the community a platform to tell our military 'thank you' for making our freedoms possible." Tickets are available at Northern Realty at the Layton Hills Mall, Lokals, Smith's Tix outlets and at Smithstix.com . The Davis Conference Center is located at 1651 N., 700 West in Layton, attached to the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel. (Federal endorsement of the events or organizations mentioned in this article is not intended.) hard copy pledge form if you prefer. For those who have already contributed, "Thank you!" You can be sure your generous donation will go where you intend with significant results. If you're still deciding whether to pledge, we urge you to consider this worthy opportunity to help so many in need. With just two weeks left in this year's campaign, there's not much time left.
