This year's "Team Hill Round Up" event is scheduled for Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. at Hill Aerospace BY MARY Hilltop Times editor W asatch Elementary School invited the United Way and the Hill Air Force Base honor guard, and base volunteers, to a special assembly on Sept. 11, as part of the new school year in a brand new school building. The 9-11 Grant reading program partnered with Wasatch Elementary School and United Way for the special Sept. 11 proceedings. Officials from this program typically invite local police, fire and Hill Air Force Base representatives to read to students from books about giving and on service to others, said Sally Carter, volunteer coordinator with the United Way of Northern Utah, who was in charge of the event. Thirty volunteers from Hill Air Force Base came to participate and were present for an assembly. The Hill Honor Guard performed the raising of the flag outside the school as an introduction to the events. Because Gov. Gary Herbert had requested all flags be flown at halfmast on Sept. 11, in remembrance of the 2001 events, the flag was raised to the top and then lowered to midway point. The pledge of allegiance was recited and classes entered the glass doors to the brand new auditorium for the assembly. Camille Mortensen, sister to Brady Howell, who was killed Sept. 11, 2001, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., spoke to the students about why she considered her brother a hero. Growing up in Sugar City, Idaho, Brady loved to read "Encyclopedia Brown" and other detective stories and when he was in the fourth grade he formed a detective club with his friends. She said he and his friends wrote a letter to the president offering to help solve any mysteries that the lead- See ROUND UP I page 3 IN THE KNOW Aircraft Maintenance Employees reunion A reunion for retired Hill Air Force Base aircraft maintenance employees will be Thursday, Sept. 27, 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Hill Aerospace Museum. Commander's Cup Golf Tournament The Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah will hold its annual Commander's Cup golf tournament at Hubbard Golf Course on Oct. 1. Check in begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by an 11:15 a.m. golf clinic with LPGA professional Brittany Lincicome. The tournament starts at noon. Cost is $130 per golfer, which covers a golf clinic, greens fees, golf cart, food and prizes. Proceeds from the tournament directly support the Hill Aerospace Museum Foundation. Military Appreciation Night at WSU, Oct. 5 Save the date, Oct. 5, for a military appreciation night football game at Weber State University. The Wildcats will play Cal Poly at Stewart Stadium. Hill active duty, military retirees and civilian employees will receive up to four complimentary tickets for the game. Kick off is at 6 p.m. Tickets can be picked up at the Dee Events Center Ticket Office anytime leading up to the game or on game day. Must show ID. Military Retirement Appreciation Day The Hill Air Force Base will host its annual Military Retiree Appreciation Day on Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Landing at Hill Air Force Base. Events include: presentations, exhibits, demonstrations, displays, drawings and refreshments. Keynote speaker is Col. (Ret.) Michael Jordan, Director, Marketing and Contract Services Department, Military Officers Association of America. Military retirees are encouraged to bring questions regarding the Hill AFB Clinic and Pharmacy, AAFES, Commissary, Veterans Affairs, DFAS, TriCare and TriCare Retiree Dental. National Hispanic Heritage Month activities Hispanic Heritage Committee E ach year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. "The Hispanic Heritage Committee has several events lined up for everyone to enjoy and learn about the culture," said Staff Sgt. Vanessa Duarte, 75 ABW/CCA. They include: " Child Development Center readings on Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. which started Sept. 18. " A cooking class Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Health and Wellness Center, 11 a.m. to noon, the menu will be arroz con pollo. " Latin night on Oct. 6 at The Landing, 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. with free dance lessons from Ervin Caldera. The rest of the night Martinez (DJ) will be playing Latin music. " The final event will be a fiesta at Centennial Park on Oct. 10, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $8 and will be $10 at the event. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation. Hill Air Force Base is required by the Utah De- partment of Environmental Quality to routinely sample water at consumers' taps for lead and copper. During the month of July, we took 30 samples to test for the presence of lead and cooper. Twelve of the 30 samples indicated elevated levels of copper.
