Show 4 HILLTOP TIMES TIME S June 21, 2012 2012 Parade of Homes Eel:ate:Ica eimeet PICNIC From page 1 The Salute to our Nation's Defenders Picnic will feature tons of activities for younger kids as well as nets for those who would like to challenge others to a game of volleyball. "There will be a 24-foot giant slide, a 65-foot challenger obstacle course, a bounce and slide, a slip and slide, a dragon tunnel, jousting, a 24-foot long, 15-foot high wave slide and a 24-foot rock wall so there is something for everyone," said Barbara Riddle, chairwoman of the Quality of Life Committee in charge of the picnic. There will even be a dunk tank for those so inclined to take a toss at dropping someone into the water. "Folks coming to the picnic will be greeted with over 200 American flags," said Riddle, in keeping with the patriotic theme. Professional kite flyers will be casting aloft some rather large and brightly colored kites and there will be live entertainment as Red Shot Pony performs a variety of music. "It's about doing something for the families," said Bob Ekstrom, past chairman of the Military Affairs Committee picnic committee and a member of the subcommittee in charge of the event. The picnics, initially begun in December 2001 are a simple way to give support and thanks, he said. "Thank you to the military families for the sacrifices they make every day in support of our freedoms." The event which traditionally attracts 2,000 to 2,500 on average, will also provide to-go boxes to mission critical service members who can't attend. The chiefs distribute the food to those manning stations they have previously determined won't be able to attend. "If anyone is at a mission critical station that afternoon we hope their families will come and enjoy the picnic," said Riddle. The picnic is for active duty, Guard and Reserve and their family members. It will feature beef brisket, side dishes such as coleslaw and potato salad, with strawberry shortcake a traditional favorite and slices of fresh fruit. Beverages will include a variety of soft drinks and beer for those of legal age. The picnic on Friday, July 13, will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Centennial Park. Community leaders and base leadership will be in attendance and attendees will have an opportunity to visit with them in the casual setting. For more information, contact Capt.
