A new policy means that during peak times some fitness patrons may want to use other options including the CrossFit/ combat training bicycles and track in the bubble or the circuit training room in the Warrior Fitness Center with its brand new equipment. With New Year's resolutions looming and winter conditions likely to send fitness patrons indoors, the Warrior Fitness Center is going to see increased usage. With that in mind, the 75th Air Base Base Wing recently released a memo establishing priority for military members during peak times in Service PT gear, beginning on Jan. 9. Non-uniformed members are to give priority on certain equipment during peak hours. These include 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. in the morning and 3:30 to 5:30 in the afternoon, Monday through Friday, on the strength training and cardio equipment areas on the second floor only. The racquetball courts and aerobic room are not included. For those who anticipate a heavy demand on a favorite machine, Roger Braner, 75th Force Support Squadron sustainment flight chief, suggests coming at a nonpeak time or approaching a staff member during a nonpeak time to help suggest some different options. "It's in our best interest to have our entire work force exercising," said Braner. "We strongly support our AFMC fitness program." He points out however: "Our primary mission is to support the unit commander fitness program." Base fitness centers are built to ensure the active duty members are fit to fight and are ready for combat. The size of Air Force fitness centers are determined by the number of active duty members assigned, making it a challenge to meet the needs of a large civilian AFMC base, particularly during the high usage winter months. This year a circuit training room has been added downstairs in the old yoga room on the first floor. The tennis bubble has a track and CrossFit/combat fitness type training equipment has been added as well. "We do want the population to know that we continually look at our processes and our programs to mitigate some of these problems," said Braner. Plans are currently under way to provide additional work-out resources. The Hess Center is being renovated and a July opening is planned. Twothirds of the old court area will have a new strength training and fitness area. "Ideally flexibility (is needed) in the time that the nonmilitary member comes in first and if they don't have that flexibility — then flexibility in the type of exercise that they utilize," said Braner. It is anticipated this policy will be self-policed and the need will be for the most heavily used months in winter. During peak hours year round it is requested that cardio and other machines be used for 30 minute rotations and signs are posted to that effect. "The military member must be in his or her Service Physical Training Uniform," said Braner, per the issued memorandum. Maj. Young Han, active duty member and deputy director for the force support squadron, said, "If I go in there in just some Nike gear, I'm not following policy and my guys would (remind me of that)." "We are asking military members to approach the nonmilitary members or the patron not in military attire respectfully and at the same time we hope that the nonmilitary member is 3 Hilltop |
