BY GEN. DONALD HOFFMAN American Forces Press Service W ASHINGTON — Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley issued a letter to all Airmen Nov. 8. In it, he wrote, "The mission at the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operation (AFMAO) is to provide dignity, honor and respect to the fallen and care, service and support to their families. The professionals whose privilege it is to perform this solemn duty take great pride in that responsibility to care for America's fallen. "However, due to specific concerns raised by AFMAO professionals regarding policies, processes, and procedures, the Air Force conducted an investigation that focused on allegations of mismanagement and accountability," he continued. "The Air Force has contacted the four families directly affected by the investigation and discussed these matters with them personally. If you were not contacted already, you are not one of the impacted families. "I also want you to know that the Air Force has kept the office of the Secretary of Defense, members of Congress and committees apprised of the investigation and the corrective actions we have taken. I am also working with our Service counterparts to ensure that their equities are respected. In addition, an independent panel of the Defense Health Board has been tasked to review the adequacy and effectiveness of our corrective actions and to recommend any further improvements at Dover mortuary. "The professional staff at AFMAO takes great pride in their important mission and remains dedicated to maintaining trust and confidence in their solemn duty to you and your family. As Secretary of the Air Force you have my cornmitment that we will continue to ensure the highest standards are met to provide dignity, honor, respect and reverence for our fallen and care, service and support to their families. "Thank you for your service," he concluded in the letter before his signature. I) uty, honor, country: these words are just as significant today as they were in the past. As Air Force Materiel Command continues to equip warfighters, these words have strengthened our resolve and prepared us for the future. All the great wars fought at home and abroad transformed this country, making it strong and dedicated to the cause of freedom. Many of the veterans of these conflicts paid the highest price, and it is on Veterans Day that we pause and say, "I remember." Today, we continue to have AFMC Airmen serving in harm's way around the world, as we enter our 10th year of operations following the attacks of 9/11. In this time of war, we should be mindful that today's war-fighters deserve their place with past veterans who showed Where are you from? I What is your favorite quote? HAWC Nest Commander, Air Force Materiel Command courage and sacrificed greatly in this nation's pursuit of freedom and peace. During times of war, there are many instances of bravery as generations of girls and boys leave home and return as women and men. Stories are told of a father who pushed across Europe into Germany, an uncle killed in the Pusan Perimeter battles in Korea, a brother wounded in Vietnam or a sister who served in Afghanistan. Each returned home with the hope that the next generation would never have to go to war. This is a day of remembrance — of the pain of separation, from the loss of a close friend in battle to the concern for the safety of a deployed spouse. But it is also a time to remember the triumphs, victories and freedoms that our veterans have made possible. So on this Veterans Day, take time to pause, remember and never forget. — 51.5M — = = 51.3M = 51.0M — — = .= - 330K = -= 5150C = = 10% So = 3 941 K CURRENT a 1 (-)//0 URPINIT DATA AS OF 2 NOVEMBER - - — 20% Security Forces 777-3056 24-hr.
