Show HILLTOP TIMES TIME S 7 January 27, 2011 What is that big silver thing? BY 2ND LT. STACY GLAUS 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs H as your office been making bets on what that big silver thing over Wardleigh Road is? If so, it's time to pay up. That "big silver thing" is actually a conveyor belt to assist with the construction process and mitigate traffic disruption during the construction of the Falcon Hill Northrop Grumman facility. The new construction on the west side of Hill Aill Air Force Base marks the start of the 50 year Falcon Hill project, and dirt removal on the east side of Wardleigh is the true groundbreaking of the project. "Construction is being done in phases," said Gary Stewart, Hunt Development Group construction manager. "Phase one is carving out the old area for development." Over four million pounds of concrete have already been poured for the new Northrop Grumman facilities, and excess dirt from that construction will be conveyed over Wardleigh to waiting trucks. The dirt will be used for building a new road directly behind the communication squadron's building, Building 891. This will allow Arsenal Road located on the west side of the base to be closed and removed. The closing and demolition of Arsenal Road is necessary for the development of the public access area to Falcon Hill. Excess dirt will also be used to fill in the "missile park" area, the large open area just inside the West Gate. Construction is not only being done aboveground, but also below. "All the water, sewer, storm and communication lines that currently run through 'missile park' are being moved," said Stewart. These government utilities need to be moved off of the future public area and moved back within the new base boundaries. LLOYD U.S. Air Force and change could mean an increase in truck traffic, said Mark Holt, Falcon Hill project manager. Allowing a few more minutes to get to work will be a good idea in the coming weeks and months. Construction on the new road and gate will mean intersection closures at Dogwood, Fir, and Gum Streets into the 1200 series buildings, though not all closures will occur simultane- ously. Construction on this phase of the project will continue throughout the summer. Later this fall, the West Gate will close entirely for a short stint to allow for demolition and final construction of the new West Gate. By late fall, it's expected to become fully operational allowing for three full lanes entering base and two lanes exiting it. A new traffic signal inside the gate on Wardleigh will also be installed to improve traffic flow, said Stewart. Traffic information and road closures will be published in advance in both on- and off-base news publications, as well as e-mailed out to all base employees. "We really appreciate the base's support," said Stewart. • Hill AFB Job Openings Site -ix • "Construction is being done in phases. Phase one is carving out the old area for development " ra.! .
